Departmental Overview

The Berkeley Food Institute seeks to transform food systems to expand access to healthy, affordable food and promote sustainable and equitable food production. We empower new leaders with capacities to cultivate diverse, just, resilient, and healthy food systems.

The Communications Director frames the Institute's vision, mission and work for internal and external audiences, identifies and communicates key findings from our research and trends in the field of food systems, and interprets and applies lessons from our message testing, survey results and public opinion to our communications strategies and products for greater impact. The Communication Director's purview extends beyond the traditional scope of messaging and media work towards shaping public discourse and narrative change using fundamental Institute frameworks and concepts.

Responsibilities

• Provides advice and counsel to BFI on all aspects of communications, including strategic planning, effective messaging, and problem resolution.
• Identifies specific communications needs and develops the content and process for organizational improvements.
• Manages comprehensive communications programs, including written, visual, and electronic communications.
• Advises and consults with departmental/college administration regarding all aspects of communications including developing strong communications strategies that effectively deliver the desired message, policy interpretation, and problem resolution.
• Ensures production of high-quality products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints through a variety of communication pieces in a variety of venues including written, visual, and electronic communications.
• Supervises student assistants on communications projects.
• Identifies and arranges contracts with external consultants for specific tasks, as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
• Knowledge of food systems and a dedication to sustainable and equitable food production.
• Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
• Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
• Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education.
• Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
• Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to target and/or broad general audiences.
• Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
• Knowledge of or ability to learn campus protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
• Advanced understanding of trends in the communications field and the ability to understand and parse key findings from our partners, clusters, and research teams, especially pertaining to message testing, survey results, and public opinion, and apply those lessons to our communications strategies and products for greater impact.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $88,000 - $98,900.00.

Other Information

This is a one-year, full-time (40-hours per week), Contract (temporary) position, with the possibility of renewal, dependent on funding.
