Compost Cabbie (Driver) Compost Cab

  • Date Posted November 10, 2020
  • Location Washington, DC
  • Category Agriculture / Business
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

Compost Cab is a pioneering community composting service founded in 2010. We enable people and organizations to live their values and take daily action in pursuit of healthier, more just, more sustainable communities for all. Working together, we're saving the planet, one food scrap at a time.

We've advocated for and innovated around a scalable, sustainable, inherently-local business model for residential composting. We're proud to have built one of the leading organics recycling companies in the mid-Atlantic, and proud to have shared insights and coached entrepreneurs aiming to bring the Compost Cab model to their own communities.

In addition to our core home pickup service, we operate one of the largest farmers market composting programs in the North America. We also engage with municipalities, national brands, local businesses, schools, and other institutions and organizations on their zero-waste programs.

We've won awards for our work, and been featured in the Washington Post and on NPR, among other outlets. Compost Cab is a project of Agricity, and is proudly based in Washington, DC.

Job description WE NEED YOUR HELP

Join our growing, locally-owned sustainability enterprise! Get your hands dirty, work outside, and finish each day knowing you left the world a little better off than when you started. Be part of a company filled with people who work to make a difference in the community in and around the nation's capital.

We need safe, even-keeled, reliable drivers to help us grow. If you like driving pickup trucks, cargo vans and box trucks (occasionally big ones), and you like helping people live their values, we want to hear from you.

We're looking for independent, conscientious, fast-moving people to help us serve our rapidly-expanding subscriber base. Core responsibilities include:

Support our residential and small-scale commercial programs

  • Drive a pickup/cargo van/box truck.
  • Average at least 80 stops per shift along regular, growing collection routes.
  • Provide outstanding service to our subscribers, greeting them with a smile, leaving their bins clean and their supplies replenished.
  • Operate safely – zero accidents and violations.
  • Substitute for other Compost Cabbies on an as-needed basis.
  • Assist with labor in a swing role.
  • Be a team player. Share feedback on operations and practices with the Company, and make suggestions when you identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Clean / prep vehicles and gear as necessary.

Support our FREE farmers market dropoff program

  • Drive a cargo van (sometimes a 10ft or 13ft box truck, occasionally larger).
  • Transport gear and equipment to and from markets.
  • Team up with tabling staff to help set up and break down market tents.
  • Collect food scraps and transport them for composting.
  • Clean / prep vehicles and gear as necessary.

We're looking for people who want to be part of a team, do good work, and drive safely and efficiently in support of sustainability every day. Here's who we're looking for:

  • self-starter, with strong customer-service instincts and organization skills
  • past experience as a driver (past experience on a farm, or in a garden, or around a compost pile, a plus)
  • strong sense of direction; knowledge of the DC and/or near-in DC/MD suburbs a must
  • must be able to lift 40-50 lbs comfortably, and maneuver 100-lb toters up and down a ramp
  • clean driving record and an iOS / Android smartphone required
