This position will require a dynamic, dedicated individual with a strong scientific background and expertise in conservation biology, applied ecology, ecotoxicology, entomology and/or (a) related field(s). The position also requires excellent research and writing skills, willingness to learn about new subjects, a strong desire to be a “voice for the voiceless” and an excellent work ethic. Advocacy experience in campaign or organizing work is a plus. The Scientist will help CFS address the harmful production practices of industrial agriculture and support sustainable alternatives. Emphasis areas include reducing use of toxic pesticides, pollinator protection, and climate-friendly farming practices.
Main Responsibilities:
• Draft scientific comments on proposed government agency decisions related to industrial agriculture, with the goal of protecting public health and the environment, including imperiled species and pollinators.
• Research and draft scientific reports and fact sheets for policymakers and the general public to highlight threats posed by industrial agriculture to human health and the environment.
• Provide scientific support for programmatic staff, including CFS attorneys in litigation.
• Engage with media outlets to raise awareness and drive the national discussion about key environmental health issues.
• Build relationships with key scientists outside CFS.
Essential Qualifications and Skills:
• Completion of a Master’s degree and/or a Ph.D. in a relevant scientific field such as conservation biology, applied ecology, ecotoxicology, or entomology. Candidates with exceptional related experience or Master’s degrees in other relevant fields will be considered.
• Strong interest in issues at the intersection of agriculture and the environment, such as ecotoxicity of pesticides, pollinators, water pollution, soil health, and genetically engineered organisms.
• Ability and willingness to tackle new subject areas outside your particular area(s) of expertise.
• Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills
• Excellent communication skills, including public-speaking skills.
• The ability to communicate in different styles, depending on the forum, project, and audience.
• The ability to translate complex scientific concepts for a lay audience.
• A strong work ethic and good time-management skills.
• The characteristics of a dynamic and confident self-starter who can work effectively both independently and within a team.
• Experience and/or interest in working with the media.
• The ability to juggle multiple projects on both long- and short-term timelines.
• A passion for CFS’s work and mission, including a demonstrated commitment to environmental protection.
