Queens County Farm Museum is one of the longest continually farmed sites in New York State, dating back to 1697. Today, the farm serves as a vital resource connecting people to agriculture and the environment creating learning opportunities and conversations about biodiversity, nutrition, health and wellness, climate change and preserving local history. Queens County Farm Museum is a New York City Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places. Queens Farm hosts a wide variety of acclaimed education programs, public events and adult education programs.

Job Description:

Queens Farm’s  Agriculture Department is looking for motivated, energetic individuals to join its team for the 2021 growing season.  Through participation in the day-to-day operations of production, the Seasonal Farmers will learn the skills necessary to work on a diversified farm.  

Each day is different, and our farm team works together on approximately 4 acres to propagate, grow, harvest, process, and sell over 200 varieties of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers. Seasonal Farmers will also gain experience handling our livestock (steers, alpaca, sheep, goats, and laying hens). As a public farm and the largest tract of farmland in New York City, Queens Farm provides a unique opportunity for on the job training in the growing urban agriculture movement. Seasonal Farmers are exposed to considerations and responsibilities that extend beyond production. We strive to cultivate a space which engages people in many different ways. 

Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

  • Field work (bed prep, composting, direct seeding, transplanting, trellising, weeding), market work (harvesting, processing, Farmstand facilitation and preparing wholesale orders), greenhouse work, flower arranging, irrigation, animal chores. 
  • Use of basic farm machinery and vehicles to complete tasks
  • Assist with Farmstand facilitation
  • Lead and support volunteer groups
  • Visitor engagement
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience and Qualifications: 

  • At least one (1) full season working in a diversified vegetable operation
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs
  • Ability and willingness to work outside in adverse weather conditions and stand on one’s feet for extended periods
  • A commitment to learning different ways of growing & selling food and passionate about developing a career in agriculture
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a team and independently
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with diverse populations
  • Maintain high energy and work efficiently with attention to details and timeliness
  • Comfort and ability to work in a fast paced work environment

Our ideal candidates are  self-motivated, positive, and patient, with stellar people skills and a passion for local food and sustainable food systems. Knowledge about a variety of organic produce would be a great asset to our team as well as an interest in small-scale intensive farming practices.
