Truck&Trailer;Driver/Handyperson Outstanding In The Field

  • Date Posted May 05, 2021
  • Location Santa Cruz, CA
  • Category Culinary / Production
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description
Our mission is to re-connect diners to the land and the origins of their food, and to honor the local farmers and food artisans who cultivate it. Outstanding in the Field is a roving culinary adventure – literally a restaurant without walls. Since 1999 we have set the long table at farms or gardens, on mountain tops or in sea caves, on islands or at ranches. Occasionally the table is set indoors: a beautiful refurbished barn, a cool greenhouse or a stately museum. Wherever the location, the consistent theme of each dinner is to honor the people whose good work brings nourishment to the table. Ingredients for the meal are almost all local (sometimes sourced within inches of your seat at the table!) and generally prepared by a celebrated chef of the region. After a tour of the site, we all settle in: farmers, producers, culinary artisans, and diners sharing the long table.
Job description

Outstanding in the Field is now accepting resumes for our 2021 Tour Crew!

Outstanding in the Field is a roving restaurant adventure. We have served thousands of guests at our long table since 1999. We have held farm dinners in all 50 states and 16 different countries.  We work with some of the best chefs in the country to connect our guests to the source of their food.

Our 2021 tour runs from June 21 to November 14 2021. During this time the Outstanding in the Field tour crew will drive around the country producing over 90 events. Our season kicks off with dinners in California followed by five months of dinners around the United States.

TOUR TRUCK & TRAILER DRIVER/HANDYPERSON - Service Team Member

You must be able to work well in a team environment, have the ability to drive a 2020 diesel Dodge truck with a 22’ trailer of event equipment attached to it, have the experience and ability to build and fix things throughout tour, and be willing to learn about food, farming, service, and hospitality.

The main responsibilities of this position are driving the tour crew and event equipment on a cross-country US tour while executing farm dinner along the way, making sure the trucks and trailers stay up to date on maintenance, fixing equipment that breaks along the way, and a bit of construction when needed, such as periodically stringing lights over outdoor dinner tables, building small bridges out of 8ft banquet tables for beach dinners, making the inside of our trailers more efficient when needed, etc.

The tour crew is responsible for all aspects of set-up, break down, and execution of OITF events. During the dinners, crew members will primarily serve at the table, or help breakdown and loud-out the reception area while the dinner portions of the events are in full swing.

Job description includes, but is not limited to:

  • Truck & trailer driving and overseeing maintenance of company vehicles
  • Knowing where a truck and trailer can/cannot be driven on a farm, mountain and/or vineyard
  • Placing trailers into place for load-in, load-out of events on-site
  • Practicing and applying safe and efficient driving habits
  • Fixing broken equipment when needed
  • Building infrastructure specific to elevating the guest experience when needed
  • Setup and breakdown of each event: Setting up tables, chairs, kitchen, equipment, packing and unpacking trailers, and hauling water across outdoor event sites, etc
  • Learning about farms, food, wine, and service
  • Professionally and enthusiastically representing Outstanding in the Field with a focus on the guest experience
  • Building and maintaining relationships with chefs, farmers, winemakers, and guests across the country

Applicants should be great communicators, have an amazing work ethic, and be excited about spending a summer outdoors. Applicants should have travel experience, a positive attitude, an outgoing personality, and be able to work and live in a team environment.

Successful candidates will fill the listed responsibilities above, plus have other skills to offer. Service Team members can plan on traveling domestically starting June 21st through November 14th. All staff should be comfortable camping and working in all weather conditions.

***Positions start at the end of June in Santa Cruz, California and end in November back in Santa Cruz. A huge aspect of being a part of the crew is traveling with the team for 5+ months across the country! The OITF crew will become your very close family: you must be flexible, cooperative, and independent in order to work, live, sleep, and eat with the tour crew for 5 months - think about what that means before you send us your resume and cover letter!

***We'd like to acknowledge that although we are not clear of the pandemic in the country or the world, we are confident that, along with the recent accessibility and availability of the Covid-19 vaccines, we can keep our staff and guests safe from the virus by following CDC health guidelines, as well as each state's Covid-19 safety protocols, including mask mandates and guest count caps when/where needed.

Our Covid-19 protocol team has been working on providing our event planners with updated information in real time regarding health policies and protocols from across the country.
