Job description MOFAD is seeking an individual to run the day-to-day operations at The Africa Center at Aliko Dangote Hall in Harlem as we debut African/American: Making the Nation’s Table, celebrating 400 years of African American contributions towards our nation’s culinary history. You will be in charge of ensuring our space is active, safe, and engaging for all guests. You will oversee the visitor experience and improve workflows to ensure day-to-day operations function properly. As one crucial role in a small staff, you will be part of the continuous growth of New York City's next great cultural institution.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES PRIOR TO EXHIBITION OPENING

  • Working hours Monday through Friday, November 2021 - Mid January 2022
    • Oversee opening of the exhibition 
    • Coordinate with design project lead on exhibition fabrication
    • Coordinate access to exhibition space for vendors
    • Liaise with The Africa Center on use of space, coordination, and emergency protocol training for operations team
    • Help create training/operations manual for exhibition space and employees
    • Hire, onboard, and train operations team (visitor services associates and exhibit interpreters)
    • Coordinate with Volunteer Manager on volunteer access to space, expectations, schedule, and training
    • Do whatever it takes! Be willing to get your hands dirty and assist with all manner of tasks.
  • Merchandising
    • Work with merchandising lead to receive product, create signage, and set up retail shop


RESPONSIBILITIES DURING EXHIBITION 

  • Working hours Wednesday through Sunday, mid-January - June 2022
  • Oversee daily operations
    • Manage daily exhibition floor preparation and upkeep
    • Master our point of sale system and CRM system (specifically Salesforce / Veevart) and train staff
    • Assist and support floor staff and volunteer docents
    • Manage MOFAD’s facilities, including maintaining cleanliness and organization, and coordinate services with cleaners, laundry, waste disposal, compost, and security
    • Manage petty cash including sales register and deposits
    • Do whatever it takes! Be willing to get your hands dirty and assist with all manner of tasks.

RESPONSIBILITIES UPON CLOSING THE EXHIBITION
  • Working hours Monday through Friday, June through mid-July 2022
  • Oversee closing of the exhibition
    • Coordinate de-installation of exhibition with Curatorial Director and vendors
    • Coordinate access to exhibition space for vendors 
    • Liaise with The Africa Center on closing needs 
    • Pack up reception, retail shop, and other items as needed for move-out
    • Offboard operations team (visitor services associates and exhibit interpreters)
    • Coordinate with Volunteer Manager to offboard and evaluate volunteer program
 

QUALIFICATIONS:

You:

  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and willing to enforce protocols with staff, volunteers, and guests as per NYC Health regulations and protocol.
  • Are totally sold on the MOFAD mission and love what we do!
  • Have strong interpersonal, collaborative, written communication, and customer service skills
  • Are an excellent project manager who can prioritize and manage time effectively while simultaneously handling multiple tasks
  • Have an entrepreneurial spirit and strong problem-solving skills
  • Are willing to learn to how to use any POS and database systems you aren’t already familiar with
  • Basic handyperson skills and basic computer literacy
  • Willing and able to work a nontraditional work schedule, including weekends
 

Preferred:

  • Have 2+ years of management experience, preferably in the arts, hospitality, or a similar client-facing industry
  • Some experience with Salesforce and/or Veevart
  • Knowledge of museum visitor services and New York City cultural institutions
  • Fluency in food culture, history, science, production, commerce, and/or policy
  • Multilingual
 

This is a full-time position beginning November 2021 and ending in mid-July 2022, with the potential to extend based upon performance and museum funding. Compensation range will be $45-50K, health insurance included. This is a non-exempt position, and is eligible for overtime pay. Hours are tracked accordingly.
