About us:

Bahner Farm is a family farm producing MOFGA certified organic producing certified organic mixed vegetables. We farm on about 12 acres of fields, with about 6 in vegetable production and 6 in cover crops each year. In addition, we grow fresh greens all winter in unheated hoophouses and 2 heated greenhouses. We are located on Rt. 3, only 5 miles from Belfast.

Our primary operation is mixed vegetable production for our farmstand, a multi farm CSA and wholesale accounts. We also grow annual garden seedlings that we sell through our farmstand in the spring and early summer. We typically have 6-8 employees April-October, and 3-4 employees November-March. 

We love hanging out and working with our employees. We host monthly farm crew dinners so we can all relax and socialize a bit outside of work.

Job description

This position can be full or part time. We are looking for 1-2 year-round farm crew employees, and 2 additional seasonal farm crew employees. 
 

Overall job description:

Our farm crew is the backbone of the farm. Farm crew participate in daily tasks to keep the farm running. These tasks change throughout the year.

When divided by season, the main tasks are:

  • MARCH-APRIL: Seeding, harvest, greenhouse preparation
  • MAY-JUNE: Seeding, transplanting, weed control, and cultivation, harvesting
  • JULY-AUG: Harvesting, late plantings, weed control, cultivation
  • SEPT-OCT: Fall harvests, winter crops preparation, farm maintenance
  • NOV-FEB: Harvest, pack orders, farm maintenance

Approximate hours per week:

  • March - April: M-F 8:00-4:00
  • May: 7:00-5:00, M, W, Th, F 
  • June, July, August: 7:00-5:00, M, W, Th, F 
  • Oct: M-F 8:00-4:00
  • Nov, Dec, January, Feb: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 8:00-5:00 

Important skills and qualities:

  • Effective time-management
  • Strong work ethic
  • Farm work experience or other experience in physical labor
  • Love of the outdoors
  • Able to lift 50 lbs easily
  • Able to work efficiently and cheerfully for long periods of standing, kneeling, bending and lifting. 
  • Not required, but much appreciated: Drivers license, and ability to drive a manual transmission. 
  • Friendly attitude and a good sense of humor - We like to have fun at work.
  • We expect, most of all, an earnest commitment to the farm and enthusiastic participation. Farm work includes heavy physical labor – we are looking for workers who would see this as a welcome challenge, and not drudgery.
