We are seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual, preferably with farming experience, to coordinate two of our vital programs, Food Donations and Volunteers, which work together to help further our mission. This position requires a minimum of 25 hours per week, from March to November, with the possibility of extending beyond November. Occasional weekend work will be required (one to two weekend days per month).

Hilltop Hanover Farm staff are a group of people who each bring unique and varying skills and interest and who all care deeply about the mission of the farm to support our community through shared work, food, and environmental stewardship. Our full time year round staff provide expertise in their respective fields and also work together daily to collaborate on shared projects. During the growing season, our staff team nearly doubles with the addition of seasonal crew members. Interns and volunteers help fill in where needed and create a robust and ever changing work force. We value welcoming new friends, guests, and workers into our community and strive to make our farm a place where people from all backgrounds and identities can all learn, ask questions, and enjoy ice cream together. Our staff team is a reflection of the community we have built and are essential in doing the good work of farming! We acknowledge that everyone has different personal goals and we work to support individual growth while making sure the needs of the farm are also met.

Job Description

In 2021 we donated 14,000 pounds of fresh produce to local food banks and soup kitchen and hosted over 2,500 hours of volunteer work. In 2022, we intend to grow our volunteer program and strengthen our relationships with our food donation partners.

This position requires a highly organized person who loves working with people from diverse backgrounds and skill levels to implement a robust volunteer program and to grow our food donation program. This position is good for someone who loves both physical work in the growing fields and administrative work in the office.

Responsibilities

  • Work in the field leading volunteer groups at various tasks including weeding, harvesting, transplanting and projects related to farm production
  • Assist with harvest days and teach volunteers correct methods for harvesting and washing vegetables
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and participate in gleaning days when produce is abundant
  • Create and schedule additional volunteer opportunities including weekend volunteer days in collaboration with Farm Operations and the Native Plant Program
  • Maintain oversight of food donation schedule, matching produce donations to the needs of our 6-10 food banks partners, coordinate food donation pick ups
  • Maintain up to date electronic records on food donation poundage, volunteer forms, and volunteer hours contributed
  • Create a welcoming and rewarding volunteer program, in which the needs of the farm and the interests and goals of each volunteer are in harmony
  • Respond to volunteer inquiries and perform outreach to build a pool of regular volunteers and orient new volunteers
  • Grow our Corporate & Group Volunteer program through outreach to local businesses
  • Create and distribute a Volunteer Newsletter on a monthly basis
  • Keep an eye out for relevant grant and funding opportunities
  • Maintain high energy and a positive attitude in a fast paced environment

Qualifications

  • Detail oriented with clear communication skills
  • Computer proficiency; experience with MS Office applications
  • Experience with creating outreach materials
  • Experience with salesforce software a plus but not required
  • Love working outdoors in all weather while keeping volunteers motivated and safe
  • Ability to work efficiently during harvesting, processing, washing, and packing
  • Comfortably able to lift 40lbs
  • Ability to be flexible with daily tasks
  • 1-2 seasons of experience working in agriculture or horticulture preferred, but not required

Schedule and Compensation

The Food Donation and Volunteers Coordinator will work a regular schedule between 25-35 hours per week and be required to work one to two weekend days per month. The position runs from March to November with the possibility of extending employment beyond November. We offer hourly compensation between $18-22/hour DOE. We are unable to provide transportation or housing at this time.
