Job description

Summary: Jorgensen Farms produces and sells vegetables, herbs, and eggs all 12 months of the year. Over the course of our 20 year history as an organic farm, our farming practices have changed, evolved, and matured. We believe that Jorgensen has a chance to be a model farm of the future - a farm that is beautiful and managed with care, a farm that meets the spiritual and material needs of the community, and a farm that provides purpose and a good livelihood to the working farmers.

 

Growing Philosophy: Our growing philosophy for developing healthy soil and healthy vegetables follows four principles: permanent and raised beds, generous use of compost, exclusive use of hand tools, and zero or shallow tilling. Our chickens are rotated on pasture daily to fresh foliage to ensure animal health and consistently quality eggs. We use a data-driven approach that focuses on a select number (8-12) of high value crops that we can produce consistently to our retail customers and onsite Jorgensen Catering operation, as well as provide good economic return to the farmer. This makes for happy, repeat customers and the ability to care for our staff by providing competitive wages to farm. As an established event and hospitality business, Jorgensen Organics also has plans to begin an onsite farm store as well as provide interactive tours and educational opportunities for the general public. 

 

Responsibilities:  Tasks include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Plan and coordinate the production of vegetables, microgreens, herbs, and pasture-raised eggs
  • Lead weekly management meetings about week priorities, field work plan, upcoming events, weekly team assignments, feedback and reviews
  • Participate in regular field work with the crew, including seeding, transplanting, cultivating and hand weeding, hoop house work, harvest, post-harvest washing and packing, and other field projects
  • Coordinate with Executive Chef of Jorgensen Catering to ensure weekly orders are processed and fulfilled
  • Implement sustainable pest-, disease-, and weed-control practices
  • Lead tours of production area for our monthly Catering Tastings and new public tours (once a month)
  • In conjunction with the CEO/COO ensures the Organics operation is aligned with Jorgensen quality standards, vision, values, and culture
  • Updates and maintains applicable procedures and manuals
  • Recruit, hire, and manage exit process for Field Crew with support from HR
  • Manage team performance by instructing Field Crew and conducting performance evaluations
  • Plan and facilitate training for the Field Crew
  • Schedule and coordinate Field Crew schedules
 

Qualifications:  

  • Minimum 3 years experience in organic market gardens
  • Minimum 1 year experience in hoop house/greenhouse operations
  • Minimum 1 year experience of managing an organic market garden operation
  • Ability to provide useful and consistent feedback to crew members and set a positive tone for overall work environment
  • Excellent time management and ability to work quickly 
  • Strong work ethic and excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to quickly pick up new concepts and techniques and then teach them to others
  • A valid driver’s license and access to personal vehicle for reliable transportation to the farm
  • Proficiency with Google Suite preferred

Conditions:  The Farm Manager may be required to work outdoors any day of the year and in all kinds of weather.  Evening and weekend work may be required, especially during the peak growing and harvest season. Compensation this position is : salaried, 50k-75k Application instructions
