About the Center for Land-Based Learning

The mission of the Center for Land-Based Learning is to inspire, educate, and cultivate future generations of farmers, agricultural leaders and natural resource stewards. We achieve this mission by providing experiential education programs for high school students (the SLEWS, Caring for our Watersheds, and FARMS Leadership Programs) and a beginning farmer training and development program for adults (the California Farm Academy). These model programs provide hands-on experiences through which participants develop leadership skills and create connections to environmental, agricultural, and food system careers. Our programs span 27 California counties and reach over 2,000 people each year.

Job description

The Central Coast FARMS Coordinator position is .5 FTE with flexible work hours. The expectation is to work 20 hours a week, although running two programs may require more hours in one week than others, and some weeks with less than 20. The average should be 20.

Duties include planning, coordinating, and facilitating both the FARMS Leadership and FARMS Advanced Programs for the region:


Duties for the entire program:
  • Recruit, train, and facilitate industry partner participation in FARMS field days.
  • Communicate with and make yourself available to all FARMS Program partners to ensure that program goals and objectives are achieved at each field day and throughout the program.
  • Provide materials and supplies, including relevant supplementary reading materials prior to events.
  • Procure donations for field days when possible--food, transportation, supplies.
  • Provide healthy food choices for the field day. Use mealtime to talk about nutrition and healthy eating as it relates to our food system and agriculture.
  • Perform evaluation of every field day and overall program outcomes (Note: Pre-and-post surveys provided by CLBL office, and are to be filled out at first field day and last field day of the year).
  • Develop, foster and maintain good relationships with local farmers, ranchers, agribusiness, food-system advocates and organizations, environmental groups, etc. to design field days, come up with new topics and locations for field days, and identify opportunities for FARMS students such as summer internships and/or jobs, and college scholarships.
  • Serve as a team member to the statewide FARMS Leadership Program coordination team.
  • Act as an advocate for the FARMS Leadership Program at the local level. This includes giving presentations at local Farm Bureau, service clubs and other organizational meetings, assisting with fundraising and grant writing, working closely with local college campus partners, etc.
  • Submit bi-weekly updates to manager that include program updates, partner updates, and other important notes.
  • Write a Blog post after each field day and post it to the CLBL website and share with each field day host.
  • Provide program information needed to the CLBL Development Team to support grant/funding proposals and reports.
  • Travel and attend two FARMS retreats per year, normally held at the main CLBL office in Woodland, CA.
  • Maintain and update Bloomerang (CRM) database for region.
  •  Keep multiple Excel sheets and Word documents current with planned expenses, current partners, field day dates/locations/commodities, etc.
Experience Required
  • Minimum of a 2-year Post-Secondary (AA) Degree in Agriculture, Education, Environmental Science or related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience working with middle school/high school youth in a formal (classroom) or informal (camp, program) setting, including developing curriculum, evaluation and classroom management in an outdoor setting.
  •  Knowledge of, and experience with environmental education, service learning, project-based learning and/or other hands-on educational models.

Skills required:
  • Strong written, oral and electronic communication skills
  • Self-motivated, ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of Agricultural/Environmental Sciences, issues, trends, and content.
  • Experience with youth development/workforce development.
  • Knowledge of the local area and community; resources, locations of possible field days and organizational partners, local farmers/ranchers/ag businesses.
Expectations:
Must provide your own home office space. CLBL will provide a computer (if needed) and printer.
Compensation
The Central Coast FARMS Program Coordinator position is a 0.5 FT, non-exempt, hourly position, with a pay range of $23 - $28/hour depending on experience. This position includes vacation, sick days and 13 paid holidays. CLBL also provides the
