Company description Cedar Circle Farm and Education Center is a non-profit educational organic farm located on conserved land along the Connecticut River in East Thetford, VT. Our farm consists of over 40 acres and, as well as growing organic produce, is home to a bustling farmstandcafé, commercial kitchen, and Education Center. We are dedicated to agricultural scientific research in the public interest, and to providing agricultural education and training to children, parents, educators, farmers, consumers, students and other members of the public. The Retail Manager represents all of Cedar Circle Farm & Education Center to our customers, ensuring that they have the best possible experience during their visit. This person plays a critical role in promoting the farm’s mission, produce, baked goods and café drinks, plants and flowers, bought-in products, CSA, and education programs. In addition to overseeing the day-to-day farm store and café operations, the Retail Manager leads the retail crew and communicates closely with other department managers to make sure that products are displayed well, inventory is accurate, and staff is educated about the products.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversight of day-to-day farm store and café operations

  • Pricing and point-of-sale (POS) management
  • Oversee inventory tracking and ordering of products sold in the store
  • Merchandising: Create appealing, full displays of all produce, kitchen products, and bought-in products
  • Ensure there is always accurate signage for all products in the store and café
  • Troubleshoot technical issues (i.e. credit card machine, POS)
  • Stay up-to-date on all educational programming and actively promote it to customers

Retail staff management
  • Create the employee work schedule and relay it to employees in a timely manner
  • Train retail staff in performance of all farmstand (store) and café duties including using the point-of-sale system, set up or create accurate signage
  • Keep staff up to date on what’s happening at the farm, specifically with CSA and education programs
  • Clearly communicate and delegate weekly and daily priorities to the retail staff
  • Conduct weekly check-ins with the farmstand and café leads
  • Foster a positive team environment
  • Regularly communicate with the Executive Director about personnel

Other duties*
  • Stay up to date on what’s happening in our fields and actively learning as much as possible so that that information can be relayed to customers and retail staff
  • Communicate with marketing staff about marketing needs, promotions, etc.
  • Complete annual budget projections for Farmstand Department. Monitor and adjust on a monthly basis with the Executive Director
  • Actively participate on the management team, assisting with strategizing about larger-scale plans and goals and objectives for the organization
  • Participate in educational activities or events as required and pre-arranged by Education Program Manager

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Retail and management experience required
  • Knowledge of produce preferred
  • Competence delivering clear directions and project supervision
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Consistent attention to detail
  • Positive, energetic interpersonal skills and passion for local food and agriculture
  • Ability to take direction, ask for help/clarity, and give/accept constructive feedback
  • Flexible, creative, and able to perform well in diverse conditions and under pressure

COMPENSATION

The Retail Manager is an hourly position with benefits including health benefits (50% of the group premium is employer paid), paid time off, fresh produce, and a 20% discount to our farm stand.
