La Cocina (“The Kitchen”) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, full-service, shared-use commercial kitchen (2,220 sq. ft.) and business incubator. The goal of La Cocina is to assist low-income entrepreneurs, primarily women, immigrants and people from communities of color, in becoming economically self-sufficient by providing: (1) a fully approved and equipped commercial kitchen they can use for the development and ongoing preparation of their business; (2) professional food industry technical assistance designed to improve their business operations, market penetration, profit, economic scale and sustainability; (3) access to new markets and (4) access to capital. LA COCINA’S MUNICIPAL MARKETPLACE, the country's first women-led food hall, is located in the heart of San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. The La Cocina Municipal Marketplace is a 7,000 sq. ft. food hall with a commissary kitchen, located at 101 Hyde Street in the Tenderloin. Opened April 2021, the Municipal Marketplace is home to seven fast-casual restaurants operated by La Cocina incubator businesses. An additional kiosk space will feature rotating pop-ups and La Paloma’s Bars serves happy hour and late-night drinks. The Marketplace transforms into event space for corporate events, special occasions, and community activations.

Job description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Under the guidance of the Municipal Marketplace Manager, the Food Service Sales Associate is responsible for providing a friendly and efficient service in the food-hall and has both on-the-floor and register service duties. This position is responsible for greeting customers, upkeeping the dining space in welcoming conditions and ensure an enjoyable customer dining experience. The ideal candidate is energetic, takes pride in customer service and acts as an ambassador on behalf of La Cocina's mission, and is knowledgeable to speak about La Cocina's incubator program and our food-hall offerings. This role is focused on service and reports to the AGM and GM.

The Food Service Sales Associate is a part-time, non exempt position and offers pre-tax commuter, 401k and meal credit benefit. Weekday schedule of up to 30-36 hours, AM and PM shifts, including variable hours on nights, weekends, and holiday peaks.

General job duties include, but are not limited to:
 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Hospitality and Sales

  • Offer all customers a friendly, welcoming and enjoyable experience
  • Approach and greet customers as they walk in with a smile and be ready to be of service
  • Proactively offer guidance and recommendations to customers regarding food hall vendors, the menus, La Cocina’s retail offerings and La Paloma bar
  • Introduce customers to La Cocina’s program and mission
  • Keep an eye on the entrances and be ready to open the door for customers who need physical support
  • Take customer orders at the counter for both indoor dining, outdoor parklet seating and ensures to-go orders are fulfilled accurately and timely
  • Lead with hospitality and appeal to impatient or irritated customers, especially during rush hours
  • Respond to all customer calls in a timely manner and direct inquiries to the appropriate staff member

Service

  • Function as a sales and service associate for marketplace food program, onsite and offsite catering
  • Function as the host/hostess of the food hall and of La Paloma and works the register to take customers' La Paloma bar orders
  • Follow daily opening and closing procedures, monthly inventory counting, and other duties as instructed by the manager
  • Performs on-the-floor duties, such as refilling common dining area supplies, cleaning tables, communicating with chefs on order fulfllment
  • Use POS to receive payments and present change to customers, process payments including all credit card and cash payments, creating customer tabs, etc.
  • Make POS changes for menu items and prices as instructed by the manager
  • Ensure a balance of the register at the end of the shift by following closing procedures
  • Process to-go orders, pack food items and coordinate with vendors and delivery personnel to ensure the food orders go out to the right person and on time
  • Clean the tables in the dining room and bar areas, and outdoor seating, and ensure cleaning before service, during service and closing.
  • Support in troubleshooting POS for the other Marketplace businesses as needed
  • Keep track of incoming online orders from the POS for orders placed days in advance
  • Collaborate as a team player with the marketplace team of bussers, bartenders, janitorial and security team to ensure that the food hall operates with a high level of fun, service, cleanliness and safety
  • Assist with prep work and service for the pastry program, catering orders, and bar prep and service
  • Assist with other related duties as instructed by the manager

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma coupled with experience in related positions, as well as working knowledge in a similar role
  • 2+ experience in food and food retail service, bar or restaurant
  • Punctuality, reliability and excellent time management skills
  • Enthusiastic, friendly and energetic with a genuine desire to provide outstanding customer service
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Strong communication skills
  • Toast - POS experience preferred
  • Cash handling and or cashiering experience
  • Excellent mathematical, multitasking, and computer skills
  • Multi-lingual, preferably Spanish and English
  • Proficiency in using computers, calculator, and other machines required for transactions
  • Ability to work with flexibility in a continuous schedule of day, nights, holidays, and weekends
  • Love for good food and the TL
