Job description

Part time, year round (Full-time March through October and part-time November through February)

The Annual and Perennial Lead is responsible for assisting the department manager with all stages of planning and implementing our annual and perennial department growing environments at Cedar Circle including our propagation areas, greenhouses, garden retail area, outdoor gardens and perennial nursery. Your primary responsibilities will include helping to hire, train and lead a team to implement the department’s seasonal and daily work plans. In addition, the department lead will act in place of the manager when they are away by helping to accept and place orders, organize the day’s work, and to plan and organize A&P staff to accomplish all tasks effectively and efficiently while providing excellent customer service. As a hands-on member of a diversified farm team, the Annual and Perennial lead will also work alongside other department teams to accomplish projects as requested.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Major Responsibilities

  • Oversee a team and implement all production of Annuals, Perennials and Flower Gardens to include sanitizing greenhouses and materials, seeding, potting, watering, fertilizing, and monitoring of greenhouse temperatures and systems ( making adjustments and repairs as needed)
  • Participate in the hiring and training of a seasonal team to accomplish all Annuals & Perennials (A&P) Department goals
  • Assist department manager with analyzing sales data and adjusting plans for the following season
  • Assist with the ordering of plants, seeds, pottery, garden tools, and supplies needed including receiving orders, unpackaging, displaying, pricing, moving into greenhouses in coordination with department manager
  • Help keep greenhouses in working order, including watering and fertilization systems, the physical function of greenhouses and communicating issues with department manager and Operations Manager
  • Proactively maintain all retail areas during 8 month sales season including creating and maintaining aesthetically pleasing displays
  • Provide excellent, knowledgeable customer service for all Annual and Perennial department visitors
  • Help coordinate and implement all aspects of the flower gardens including planning, field preparation, planting, weeding, irrigating, harvesting, pest management and crop fertility.
  • Help organize cut flower CSA, PYO and bulk flower operations including customer coordination, maintaining order records, staffing harvest days and delivery
  • Learn to enter and price all department products into the Revel System (our POS) and create labels for all products sold by the department
  • Pest management through detailed scouting and implementation of organic pest and disease control methods under the supervision of department manager
  • In coordination with A&P Manager, work with marketing, retail and education staff to promote products and provide educational opportunities for visitors

 

 

General Farm Team Responsibilities:

  • Proactively communicate about workload and staff scheduling with A&P Manager
  • Participate in planning and development throughout the season with CCFEC team as requested by A&P Manager and Director of Agriculture
  • Support other departments as needed
  • Under supervision of department manager, assist with maintaining records for compliance with USDA organic certification requirements
  • Maintain a smooth, timely flow with team members while working through projects
  • Make sound judgment calls on project implementation and time management
  • Participate in educational activities or events as pre-arranged by Education Program Manager and A&P department manager
  • Provide a positive, supportive, educational work environment for all staff and visitors


QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least one full season previous greenhouse production and/or plant propagation experience
  • At least one full season working with cut flower/ outdoor gardens and nursery crops
  • Experience training and working with a seasonal team
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks
  • Consistent attention to detail
  • Positive, energetic interpersonal skills and clear consistent communication skills
  • Ability to take direction, ask for help/clarity, and give/accept constructive feedback
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Flexible, creative, and able to perform well in diverse conditions and under pressure
  • Ability to work for long durations in inclement weather – standing, sitting, bending over, lifting and kneeling


COMPENSATION

This is a year-round position, full-time March through October and part-time November through February. The Annual and Perennial Lead is an hourly position with benefits including health benefits (50% of the individual premium is employer paid), paid time off, fresh produce, and a 20% discount to our farm stand. Pay range is $17-18/hour, depending on qualifications.
