Who We’re Looking For 

HRN is in growth mode! In the past 2 years, we’ve released a new website and visual identity, added diverse and innovative food podcast content, expanded geographically by leaning into new remote recording technologies, and embarked on new strategic partnerships. But we’re just getting started.

We’re ready for HRN to evolve in its second decade, and we’re looking for a visionary and versatile Communications Manager to help us get there. This role will take ownership over our external communications strategy and be instrumental in growing our reach and impact as an educational nonprofit.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Executive Director. It is mostly remote but requires occasional travel and in-person work. Location in the metro-NYC area is preferred.

 

What You’ll Do

The Communications Manager will steward and amplify the voice of the organization. You’ll become an expert at telling our story and will oversee and execute the communications strategy for the organization. You’ll be responsible for growing our reach and reputation, and engaging with our audience by:

  • Developing, implementing, and evaluating HRN’s communications strategy
  • Creating and scheduling content for social media, web, newsletters, press releases, audio updates, and donor communications
  • Optimizing engagement across platforms
  • Elevating HRN by creating audience growth strategies, building relationships with key promotional partners, seeking speaker and talent opportunities for hosts, and refining brand voice and style guides
  • Communicating with media outlets and journalists and creating press kits
  • Supervising and training interns on the social media team
  • Supporting fulfillment of underwriter deliverables
  • Collaborating with other departments to support seasonal/ temporal efforts such as memberships drives and events
  • Collaborating with the leadership team to develop policies and procedures for effective communication
  • Writing letters and other business correspondence

Requirements

Ideal candidates will have at least 3-5 years of professional work experience in communications, marketing, or a related field, and be able to demonstrate:

  • Proven success in organizational communications strategy, planning, and implementation 
  • Excellent writing skills and visual content creation abilities
  • Capacity to build highly effective partnerships with a variety of stakeholders, and comfort pitching to potential funders and supporters
  • Familiarity with food systems issues and passion for HRN’s mission
  • Self-motivation and self-management skills, meticulous attention to detail, and great organizational abilities
  • Eagerness to learn, grow, and build a dream job for yourself and the rest of the team; plus flexibility and appreciation for evolving job responsibilities, as HRN is in a growth phase
  • Graphic design skills and software skills- fluency in Adobe design suite preferred, along with experience in Canva, Google docs, social media and email management tools, Airtable or similar project management software
Compensation and Benefits

This is an exempt position, with base compensation of $50-60k per year dependent on experience, and opportunities for growth.
