Job description

The Center for Arts at the Armory is seeking a Full-Time Cafe Manager. 

Provide overall direction and management of the daily operations of the Cafe at the historic Armory. Promote excellent hospitality by building a team that is guest-oriented and welcoming. Be dedicated to our mission as well as our partnerships with the community.

This is a salaried, full time position with benefits and is not eligible for overtime. Salary range is $40,000 - $50,000, commensurate with experience. 

The ideal candidate for this position will be passionate about working in a vibrant and welcoming cafe environment that also hosts performances, events and art exhibitions. The Cafe Manager will also have a vision for the Cafe to realize its potential, and the follow through and know-how to realize that vision in collaboration with other staff and leadership. 

Arts at the Armory is a community arts center in Somerville, MA that has been operating since 2009 in the historic Armory building. Our mission is to provide an inclusive and accessible venue that creates opportunities for artists, brings diverse audiences together and enriches the community. We host 750+ events a year.

Responsibilities

  • Be dedicated to our mission as well as our partnerships with the community.
  • Provide overall direction and management of the daily operations of the Cafe.
  • Oversee the growth of the base of happy and loyal guests by establishing and maintaining service standards for all.
  • Promote excellent hospitality by building a team that is guest-oriented and welcoming.
  • Manage a team of Cafe staff, which includes playing a lead role in hiring, processing payroll and doing shift planning for Cafe staff.
  • Contribute to the development of the Cafe menu, set pricing, etc.  
  • Oversee the cleanliness and upkeep of the Cafe. 
  • Work with vendors and do shopping to keep cafe supplies and products stocked.
  • Supervise and manage systems of Cafe inventory management
  • Collaborate with other staff to promote the Cafe through marketing and other creative ideas such as a customer loyalty program.
  • Set up, implement, and upgrade systems as necessary to ensure smooth and efficient operations, ensuring that health and safety standards are met.
  • Manage the Cafe space and equipment, including coordinating successful health inspections with the City of Somerville and overseeing the recycling and waste management activities in a manner that demonstrates environmental sensitivity and leadership.
  • Be able to cover shifts, prepare meals and work the counter, as needed.
  • In collaboration with the Finance Team, create and follow procedures that ensure effective financial management of the Cafe.
  • In collaboration with other staff, promote the cafe through networking and marketing
  • Collaborate with the Co-Directors (CEO and COO) to develop and monitor annual budgets and goals for the Cafe.

Qualifications:

  • Dedication to our mission as well as our partnerships with the community
  • Experience in the restaurant industry
  • Demonstrated excellence as a leader, manager and team-builder
  • Excellent skills in guest services
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Experience in the arts a plus 
  • Proficiency in Square, MS Office Programs, Inventory Management 
  • Commitment to minimizing environmental impact through recycling
  • Have or be able to obtain ServSafe, Food Protection Manager, Allergen and CPR/Choke certifications.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl; use hands to operate objects, tools, and/or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; see, talk and/or hear; taste and/or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  A valid drivers license and vehicle is a plus.
