Communications & Outreach Coordinator Farmers Market Fund

  • Date Posted January 19, 2024
  • Location Anywhere
  • Category Media / Nonprofit
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

We make healthy, locally grown food accessible to underserved Oregonians.

Founded in 2009, Farmers Market Fund was incorporated as a 501(c)3 in 2012. FMF’s primary focus is Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB), a program that doubles Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits at farmers markets across Oregon and allows shoppers to bring home twice as much farm-fresh produce. Double Up is a triple win: families bring home more fresh produce, more money goes directly to small, local producers, and local economies thrive.

In 2022, FMF supported DUFB programs at 78 markets in 26 Oregon counties, distributing more than $1.2 Million of DUFB and facilitating $1.8 million in SNAP transactions at participating farmers markets. FMF also works in close partnership with a coalition of other organizations dedicated to ending hunger and supporting farmers, providing these and other organizations grant funds to implement DUFB for community supported agriculture (CSA) boxes and at grocery stores. Our grocery and CSA partners distributed over $900,000 in additional DUFB in 2022. This year, FMF is partnered with 88 farmers markets, and anticipates distributing about $1.7M in DUFB dollars.

In addition to DUFB, in 2022 FMF created a mini grant program called Growth Grants to support farmers market partners with administering DUFB. Growth Grants supplement DUFB incentive funding and are focused on increasing capacity, tools, and skills needed to implement the program successfully. In 2024 Growth Grants will also include support for markets to conduct projects and activities that reduce known barriers to customers accessing DUFB such as transportation, language support, community outreach, nutrition education, and more.

FMF has expanded dramatically in the last few years and is hiring its first Administrative Coordinator to support this growth. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing organization, and help shape the program as it enters its next phase. In 2024, FMF looks forward to reducing barriers to participation in DUFB, strengthening community partnerships, and continuing to center the feedback of SNAP participants.

Working at FMF:

We strive to create a human centered workplace that reflects the communities we serve, and where everybody feels comfortable bringing their full, authentic selves to work. Staff have flexibility in crafting their own schedules and are encouraged to incorporate a balance and boundaries between work and rest. FMF staff have access to a workspace co-located within the Portland Farmers Market office in inner NE Portland, as well as the opportunity to work fully remote. In addition to four staff, FMF has an active and engaged board of directors located across Oregon. We currently conduct the majority of our meetings remotely, but occasionally gather in person to share meals and time together.

We recognize that an equitable food system cannot exist within an inequitable society. As a direct result of centuries of structural racism, Black, Indigenous, and people of color living in Oregon perpetually experience the highest levels of hunger. Nutrition incentive programs like DUFB contribute to leveling the playing field to make local, fresh food more affordable but we know our work cannot stop there. We work together with partners and communities to extend our impact and influence into other areas of the local food system and are focused on a broader goal of creating a more equitable, just food system. FMF centers anti-racism, racial equity, and inclusion in our programs, operations, culture, and advocacy. Learn more about our DEIJ efforts here. Our staff has a wealth of lived experience with food insecurity, SNAP, farmers market management, and farming and we strongly welcome those with personal connections to this work to apply!
