Farmette is a small farm, marketplace, cafe + bakery in New Buffalo, Michigan. Our core mission is to support 100% sustainable food culture. We love our small business community along the shores of Lake Michigan and aim to uplift and enhance our unique area. We are an inclusive marketplace carrying local and sustainable produce, flowers, coffee, prepared foods, home goods and more. We plan to open in late spring 2024.

Job description

As the Grower, you'll take the lead on producing gorgeous, nutritious and high-quality products from our on-site farmette and greenhouse.

Responsibilities

You’ll collaborate with Farmette’s founder, Katie Burdett, along with the entire small Farmette team. 

  • Participate in all aspects of food and flower production with a focus on salad mixes, microgreens, herbs + flowers.
  • Maintain the farm, greenhouse, landscaping, planters and general outdoor area.
  • Production includes seeding, weeding, fertilizing, watering, harvesting, post harvest handling/washing and packing.
  • Keep all tools, hoses, buckets and general farm supplies in clean, tidy + working order. Tools are cleaned and put away everyday at the end of the day.
  • Follow Farmette’s crop plan and record keeping procedures.
  • Follow the principles of Integrative Pest Management and strive for a no-till and no-spray operation.
  • Manage a small 3 bin composting system.
  • Keep outdoor furniture clean.
  • Maintain a positive, friendly, calm + welcoming environment for all staff, customers and vendors.
  • Communicate and coordinate with the kitchen and farm team about inventory, customer feedback, etc.
  • Keep a clean + sanitary workspace 
  • Opportunity to help with other Farmette operations as seasonality and weather allows.
  • Other related assignments as necessary.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of year-round food production experience, preferably in the Great Lakes growing region.
  • Great communication + interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for high-quality food production in coordination with soil health, carbon sequestration and general Earth-positive growing practices.
  • Familiarity with the USDA Organic Certification and/or Regenerative Organic Certification best practices.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a team-driven environment. We are a respectful and positive work environment.
  • Reliability a must.
  • Able to work independently, focused and self-driven.
  • Detail oriented and observant.
  • Open to feedback with the understanding that the whole team is working towards the same goal.
  • Keep a positive and professional attitude with co-workers, customers + vendors.
  • Be able to handle the physical work of farming and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Occasionally lift and move up to 50 lbs.
  • Reach, bend and stoop frequently.
  • Join team meetings and tasting sessions.
  • Make cleanliness and food safety a top priority.
  • Live within a reasonable driving distance to Farmette and have access to reliable transportation.
  • We are a non-smoking workplace for the safety of our on-site farm.
  • All employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19
