Job description

This is a full-time position at 40 hours per week. This position could be based in Austin, TX, Lubbock, TX, or another Texas city that has proximity to our worksites.

The Grocery Retail Specialist recruits and supports retail firms for SFC’s nutrition incentive program, Double Up Food Bucks Texas (DUFBTX). The Specialist develops expertise in point-of-sale (POS) solutions for nutrition incentive programs and supports and advises retail firms in the DUFBTX network on program adoption. The Specialist manages the onboarding and contracting process for new retail firms and provides ongoing technical assistance to existing firms. The Specialist is responsible for outreach, recruitment, and engagement of small, mid-sized, and large-scale retailers across Texas, and works with the Double Up Food Bucks Texas Manager and the Food Access Director to align recruitment activities with strategic objectives. The Specialist collaborates with other members of the Food Access and Double Up Food Bucks Texas project teams to further the goals of DUFBTX and achieve grant deliverables. The Specialist facilitates relationships between the Value Chain Team and DUFBTX retailers in support of local sourcing and collaborates with the Value Chain Team as needed to promote local sourcing among DUFBTX retailers.

Job Duties:
  • Grow and manage a statewide network of retailer contacts, including small, midsized, and large-scale retailers

  • Develop and maintain expertise in POS solutions for nutrition incentive programs

  • Work with DUFBTX Manager and Food Access Director to plan, conduct, and track recruitment and onboarding for DUFBTX Retailers

  • Provide technical assistance to retail locations launching the DUFBTX nutrition incentive program

  • Facilitate a community of practice to share best practices among DUFBTX grocery retail partners

  • Ensure regular and accurate data submission by retail partners, in accordance with funder standards; facilitate other evaluation activities with retail partners

  • Work with DUFBTX Manager to regularly update outcomes data and track budget spending

  • Ensure retailer invoices are received and processed in a timely manner

  • Facilitate contract renewals and work with DUFBTX Manager and Food Access Director to negotiate expansion and incentive budgets

  • Coordinate with the Communications and Community Engagement teams to support marketing campaigns, participant outreach, and other engagement activities at DUFBTX grocery retail outlets

  • Coordinate and conduct site visits to DUFBTX retailers for compliance monitoring and program evaluations

  • Collaborate with Value Chain team to plan implementation and contractual goal setting for DUFBTX retailers measuring and increasing local sourcing in order to achieve DUFBTX program goals

  • Support the Value Chain Team in expanding local sourcing by DUFBTX grocery retail partners, including facilitating connections, navigating relationships, and support with strategic planning

  • Contribute to project, program, and organizational planning, including operations and budget planning

  • Represent SFC through presentations and on external groups or committees

About you:

You have working knowledge of the grocery retail sector and are skilled in making and nourishing relationships with a variety of stakeholders. You are passionate about making high quality produce more affordable and are interested in supporting local agriculture. You have a track record of managing projects on your own and delivering great results on time. You are confident engaging with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds. You can create a detailed plan but know how to be flexible and creative if the situation calls for it. You understand the need to address complex social issues through an equity and justice lens.

 

You will also bring expertise and demonstrated capacity in:
  • 1-2 years of experience in project management required, preferably in a nonprofit environment

  • Working knowledge of and experience in the grocery retail sector required

  • Experience providing training or technical assistance and developing training materials required

  • Technical knowledge of Point-of-Sale (POS) systems preferred

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with federal nutrition benefits programs, nutrition incentive programs, local food systems, and/or food access preferred

  • Strong written/oral communication skills required

  • Strong relationship management skills required

  • Experience with MS Office applications, including Excel and Word required

  • Experience with data entry, analysis, and reporting preferred

  • Demonstrated track record of independently managing project timelines and deliverables required

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with internal and external partners to advance goals required

  • Experience working in low-income and multi-cultural settings a plus

  • Lived experience with the communities SFC serves a plus

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus; proficiency in other languages commonly spoken in Texas a plus (e.g., Vietnamese, Tagalog, Arabic)

Sustainable Food Center offers an excellent work environment, competitive salaries, full coverage health insurance, 401k matching, generous time off and a flexible schedule. The salary range for this position is $46,000 - $50,000. Starting salary will be influenced by applicant’s qualifications and budget considerations. The position is available starting April 1, 2024.
