THE OPPORTUNITY 

Hot Bread Kitchen’s rapid growth plan through 2024 includes the expansion of our services to support the recently arrived migrant population in New York City.  Hot Bread Kitchen seeks a part-time, temporary ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages)  instructor to teach a contextualized Culinary ESOL curriculum for our 6-week Culinary Career Pathways for New New Yorkers program. Our ESOL class focuses on developing English language skills for the culinary workforce that promotes culturally and socially responsive ecosystems of support.  This role is responsible for ensuring Hot Bread Kitchen members have the language skills necessary to succeed in Hot Bread Kitchen’s culinary training program and prepare them for jobs in the food industry. During class hours, this person is responsible for the direct supervision of a Language Lab Assistant.

 

Key Responsibilities

    • Using established curricula and lesson plans, provide contextualized and differentiated ESOL instruction for students.
    • Develop activities to supplement existing curriculum.
  • Provide support to supplement NYC Food Protection course.
  • Document attendance and student’s progress.
  • Attend weekly meetings with program staff to review student progress and participation.
  • Provide one-on-one support to students as needed.
  • Use allotted administrative hours to prepare for classes.
 

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Passion for Hot Bread Kitchen’s mission
  • TESOL certification
  • Minimum 3 years teaching English as a Second Language to adult multilingual learners 
  • Best Plus Certified (preferred)
  • Spanish-speaking and/or French-speaking proficiency required and fluency preferred
  • Proactive, resourceful and results-oriented
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Strong communicator with ability to work with a diverse group of bi/multilingual adult learners

Estimated Total Project Time and Schedule:

  • Culinary ESOL for New New Yorkers
  • 100 hrs./cohort including:
    • 75 hours of contextualized ESOL instruction to up to 25 members enrolled in the Culinary Training Program (15 hrs./ week, less some weeks)
    • 25 hours of additional prep time  (approx. 4 hrs./week)
  • Classes are held in-person at City Harvest in Sunset Park, Brooklyn
  • Monday-Friday 1:15 pm - 4:15pm

Position Start date: April 16, 2024

 

Location and hours 

This position requires regular in-person attendance at City Harvest in Brooklyn starting on April 16, 2024. The class hours are 1:15 pm - 4:45 pm, five days per week for a six-week period, with the need for some flexibility in work hours. We follow New York City and State guidelines on COVID-19 vaccination and masking.

 

Compensation (teaching and prep time)

This is a 6-week position (approximately 15 teaching hours and 4 prep hours per week) . The compensation will be $45 - $55 an hour. This is a temporary position and is not eligible for benefits.
