Stout Oak Farm is a Certified Organic, solar-powered vegetable farm in Brentwood, New Hampshire. We grow 5 acres of vegetables for our CSA and Farm Store, local restaurants, and wholesale sales. We strive to create a workplace culture that is collaborative and production-oriented.  In addition to organic vegetables and microgreens, farm enterprises include seedling production for home vegetable gardeners, cut flowers, and blueberries.  With our CSA at the heart of our farm, we seek to cultivate connection and community through food and farming. We also love to collaborate with other farmers. Stout Oak Farm co-owns the food hub Three River Farmers Alliance with a few of our farmer friends.

Job Summary:  This year we are adding this new position to our team - Field Production Co-Manager - who will work closely with our current Field Production Manager who has been in this role for the past five years.  The two Co-Managers will work together to manage all aspects of field crop production on the farm. The work regularly includes field preparation and tractor work, applying amendments, transplanting by hand, mulching, weeding with hand tools, trellising, cultivating, and maintaining five acres of vegetables, along with small-scale cut flower production. Primarily focused on overseeing field tasks and carrying out field work with the crew, this position also requires a mature ability to work independently. We are specifically looking for someone with tractor driving experience to fill this role.

 

Hours:  Full-time seasonal position April through November. 40 hours per week. Weekly schedule Tuesday through Saturday 7am to 4pm. Possibility for continuing beyond November.

 

Compensation: Compensation starts at $15 - $16/hour, depending on experience. Food benefits and farm store discounts. Cost of living annual raise and professional development stipend for returning employees.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead group field work tasks including transplanting, weeding, trellising, mulching, row covers, pest scouting, amendment and compost applications, moving tarps, irrigation, bulk harvesting, etc.
  • Monitor health of growing crops ie irrigation needs, nutrient needs, pest and disease issues, etc. and take actions as needed
  • Set goals and implement a weekly field work plan in coordination with Field Co-Manager and Farm Manager
  • Train and manage team members, including new hires and part-time workers, on all field tasks.
  • Use small equipment and tractors to spread compost, prepare beds for planting, mow finished crops, maintain fields, etc.
  • Keep records of field plantings, crop management, and other records, with an understanding of records required for organic certification and food safety
  • Communicate effectively with the rest of the team; collaborate to improve systems
  • Participate in various other tasks to support other areas of the farm such as morning harvest, greenhouse and hoophouse work, wash/pack tasks, plant sales, farm store/CSA pickup, and general farm maintenance and upkeep.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years experience working on a vegetable farm in a production role
  • Specific experience in organic vegetable production including bed preparation, transplanting, irrigation, weeding, tractor driving, greenhouse seedling production, cover cropping, harvesting, post-harvest handling, and record-keeping
  • Experience operating tractors and various small machinery; familiarity with basic tractor implements and how they are used
  • Strong interest in training and managing teams
  • Loves working outdoors and embraces the challenges of a physically demanding job
  • Ability to comfortably lift 50 pounds repeatedly
  • Able to commit to work a full-time schedule for the full season

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Specific experience in cut flower production, greenhouse work, hoophouse tomato production, wash/pack tasks, or customer service/retail are a plus
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with the rest of the team
  • Confident and comfortable training new team members and managing group tasks.
  • Sets a high standard for the rest of the team; executes tasks with great attention to detail
  • Highly organized; manages time well; able to juggle multiple tasks
  • Fast worker and quick learner; thrives in a fast-paced, high-energy work environment
