Local, sustainable grocery and home goods store seeking experienced General Manager to take over daily operations and help as we expand the business to new locations around NYC. 

The General Manager (GM) will manage day to day operations of our retail store. The GM ensures the store is clean, staffed, merchandised, open for business, and operates with a strong commitment to sustainability and transparency through all levels of the business. The GM uses broad discretion and judgment to make great leadership decisions, communicates openly and effectively between staff and owners, and is responsible for the overall success of the business which will be defined in more detail in the sections below.

Staffing/Employment

Ensures all staff are trained by the standards outlined in the employee handbook and other training documentation. 

Ensures staff recognizes the importance of opening and closing duties and holds them accountable for executing all closing and opening checklist/requirements.

Understands, adopts, and consistently creates an environment where employee satisfaction and engagement with customers thrives. 

Deploys resources to staff to maximize communication, customer and employee satisfaction and seamless operation of the stores.

Assigns work tasks and activities, prepares schedules, and ensures that all shifts are covered.

Provides staff with consistent support, coaching and encouragement.

Interviews job candidates, makes hiring, termination, promotion or any other status change decisions for associates. 

Promotes the store as an employer of choice within the local community.

Ensures thorough on-boarding and off-boarding of all staff, including all activities related to compliance with the employee handbook and business goals. 

Develops and implements plans and meetings to motivate the team.

Product Availability/Working Equipment

Ensures daily orders through our online platform are prepared and the website is up to date on current product mix available in store.

Ensures staff is trained to stock the store with the appropriate levels and quality of product.

Oversees receiving goods, processing invoices, and contacting vendors for supply chain issues/product availability.

Monitors and maintains and manages online ordering platforms, POS’ systems and “slack” for internal communications on a daily basis.  

Participates in and manages company response to health, safety and other audits.

Thoroughly understands, actively participates in and trains all employees in waste mitigation programs.

 

Brand Knowledge/Proficiency

Ensures staff is up to date with knowledge of brand partners in order to provide customers with information and answer any related questions. 

Sources new products aligned with company values of sustainability, nutrition and supporting local artisans.

 

Visual/Vibe/Appeal

Uses judgment and discretion to resolve customer and associate questions and problems and determines when to refer more complex issues to the owner.

Provides ongoing feedback to employees to ensure they are adhering to company policies as well as making a positive impact while in the store.

Implements marketing programs, community events, promotions, merchandising displays, etc. to drive revenue and build community while upholding the ideals of the company.

Ensures staff is properly trained to engage with customers regarding our products, their uses, sources and benefits as well as provide support throughout the shopping process. 

 

Health/Safety

 

Maintains an in-depth understanding of all federal, state, and local sanitary, safety, and health standards, and all procedures and protocols to comply with the law.

Holds staff accountable for ensuring all safety standards are understood and followed.

Is well versed in allergen and cross-contamination procedures and can train others on this information.

The GM position reports to the Owner and is expected to work a schedule to be on site at various operating days and hours each week; some opening shifts and some higher traffic days to monitor the staff and receive deliveries.

GMs must have experience managing a grocery or retail store, or department in a larger store, or related business for a minimum of 3+ years.

GM must be self-motivated, outgoing, organized, friendly, proactive and committed to our mission. 

Demonstrates effective team management, delegation and issue resolution skills and the ability to manage multiple and concurrent priorities.

Demonstrates knowledge of sustainable products which translates from their education and/or use in their everyday life.

Is capable of and excited to, build community within the store which is inclusive, friendly and educational and based on a commitment to service, quality and integrity.
