Job description

Job Type: Salaried/Exempt

Salary: $55,000 - $57,500

The Fresh Foods Manager oversees the success of the fresh foods departments including: cafe, kitchen, grab’n go, hot and cold food bar, bakery, packaging and sanitation. They are responsible for meeting department goals for sales, margin, labor, and customer service. They communicate the brand and mission of the Co-op, as well as maintaining the Co-op’s overall image. They report to the General Manager and co-manages with fellow members of the fresh foods leadership team.  They work to achieve the collective goals of the organization and support the Ends, Vision, Culture and Values of the Co-op. 

 

Job Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities to the Fresh Foods Manager position include but are not limited to:

  • Leads the fresh foods team in all aspects of department business and customer service, setting the example for all others to follow
  • Engages in innovation within the department
  • Participate in setting sales, margin, labor, and inventory goals for fresh foods department
  • Develops and implement plans to encourage sales growth and improve price image and competitiveness within the marketplace
  • Review department financial information and take corrective action as needed to meet and set goals
  • Constantly analyzes the efficiency of department systems/procedures in order to maximize productivity
  • Ensure food prep and display areas are maintained in sanitary, orderly condition meeting and/or exceeding health department standards
  • Ensure staff is trained and kept informed of department safety procedures including BFC Food Safety Standards
  • Master the new fresh foods team member orientation, safety and training checklist, as well as job descriptions; ensure effective on-the-job training
  • Provide the necessary tools for Team Members to do their job effectively and efficiently; create and/or update procedures manual for all Fresh Foods operations
  • Attends and participates in manager meetings as well as attending storewide meetings; communicates relevant information from manager meeting to team members
  • Oversees, manages and ensures:
    • Prepared products offerings provide both variety and consistency
    • Research and development of new recipes and menu items with staff
    • Procedures for pricing dishes to meet margin goals and for marking down and/or eliminate items to reduce losses when appropriate 
    • Accurate, up to date records of cost of preparing items
    • Training of staff to offer prompt, friendly, courteous customer service 
  • Complies with Co-op standards of operation and production procedures, as well as those of all applicable regulatory agencies, and ensures on a daily basis that all products are prepared and presented in accordance with Co-op standards
  • Abide by policies and procedures outlined in the BFC Employee Handbook and other related documents
  • Practice dependability by following instructions and practicing good time management by completing assigned tasks in a timely manner
  • Perform other job-related tasks as assigned by the General Manager 

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3+ years experience running restaurant, food service, catering, or kitchen operations
  • Supervisory or management experience including hiring, training, and evaluations
  • Food Safety Certification

Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with natural foods
  • Strong business acumen and process improvement skills
  • Experience serving the public
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with proven ability to effectively translate important information to the necessary staff, vendors, etc.
  • Outstanding ability to listen, communicate, and work effectively with customers 
  • Demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands
  • Concrete ideas for how to operate a Fresh Foods department within the Co-op
  • Familiarity and “buy in” to the cooperative method of businesses
  • Ability to read finance statements, or at least a firm grasp of margin pricing
  • Willingness and ability to meet the changing requirements of the position

Weekly Work Schedule:

Retail Hours: 5 days a week, variable dates and times (Store is open 7 days a week from 8 AM – 7 PM). All sales management must work at least one weekend day and one closing shift.

The ability to stand for prolonged periods is required. May require repeating the same movements level surface for periodic periods throughout the day. Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required to prepare foods and drinks, stock shelves, store materials throughout the workday.

  • Must be able to stand up to eight hours a day
  • Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds at a time independently or with assistance on an occasional to frequent basis
  • Ability to use fine motor schools
  • Ability to adapt to changes in temperature due to opening doors, coolers, and freezers, and due to working near ovens, stoves, and open flames
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, crouch, walk, kneel, push, pull and twist repeatedly
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work with knives
  • Ability to lift product overhead and/or to climb ladders with product
  • Ability to climb stairs
  • Ability to read small print
  • Ability to write notes, emails, and items of a similar nature on a computer, touch screen, or by hand
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to noise from machinery and the general environment
  • Ability to remember product placement and back stock
