Job description

The Meat, Seafood & Cheese Manager supervises all department operations, productions and personnel within the Meat, Seafood & Cheese department, and serves as a member of the Co-op’s leadership team. They are responsible for communicating the brand and mission of the Co-op and report to the General Manager. They maintain the freshness and high quality products at the Co-op, and ensure all food operations and procedures are in compliance with the BFC Food Policy, as well as local, state and federal health regulations. They work to achieve the collective goals of the organization and support the Ends, Vision, Culture and Values of the Co-op.

 

Job Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities to the Fresh Foods Manager position include but are not limited to:

  • Leads the department in all aspects of department business and customer service, setting the example for all others to follow
  • Review department financial information and take corrective action as needed to meet and set goals; shares financial performance information with the team to encourage staff participation and idea sharing
  • Constantly analyzes the efficiency of department systems/procedures in order to maximize productivity
  • Performs all duties of a department team member (display fresh meats, seafood and cheeses, label items accurately, opening & closing duties, equipment cleaning, etc.)
  • Master the new Meat, Seafood & Cheese team member orientation, safety and training checklist, as well as job descriptions; ensure effective on-the-job training
  • Upholds a healthy, friendly, productive and safe work environment and moral; actively practices allyship 
  • Ensure the department staff are trained and participate in the development of morale, productivity, production and other relative areas
  • Ensure food prep, storage, and display areas are maintained in a clean, orderly condition meeting health department standards
  • Complies with Co-op standards of operation and production procedures, as well as those of all applicable regulatory agencies, and ensures on a daily basis that all products are prepared and presented in accordance with Co-op standards
  • Ensure Team Members are practicing safe food handling, and are in compliance with health department regulations such as proper temperatures, hair restraints, eating and drinking in working areas, glove use, etc.
  • Abide by policies and procedures outlined in the BFC Employee Handbook and other related documents
  • Practice dependability by following instructions and practicing good time management by completing assigned tasks in a timely manner
  • Perform other job-related tasks as assigned by the General Manager 

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 5+ years experience relative experience
  • 3+ years of supervisory or management experience including hiring, training, and evaluations
  • (Preferred) Food Safety Certification
  • (Preferred) Retail experience

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and delegate
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, measurements, etc.
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace
  • Ability to read and interpret documents like training materials, spreadsheets, reports and operating instructions
  • Computer literate (Windows, Microsoft 360) with the ability to learn and train others in the use of new technologies
  • Demonstrates team management, delegation, issue resolution, coaching skills and ability to motivate others and provide direction for team members
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Effective analytical, planning and problem solving skills
  • Work effectively with leadership, peers, team members, customers and vendors
  • Outstanding ability to listen, communicate, and work effectively with customers in high stress and high volume setting
  • Knowledge of appropriate sanitation practices

Weekly Work Schedule:

Retail Hours: 5 days a week, variable dates and times (Store is open 7 days a week from 8 AM – 7 PM). All sales management must work at least one weekend day and one closing shift.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The ability to stand for prolonged periods is required. May require repeating the same movements level surface for periodic periods throughout the day. Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required to cut Meat, Seafood & Cheese, stock shelves, store materials throughout the workday.

  • Must be able to stand up to eight hours a day
  • Ability to work in a sustained 50 degree environment, and occasionally in areas as cold as -10 degrees
  • Ability to lift up to 85 pounds with assistance, on an occasional basis; proper lifting and safety techniques required (cheese is heavy!)
  • Ability to use fine motor schools
  • Ability to adapt to changes in temperature due to opening doors, coolers, and freezers
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, crouch, walk, kneel, push, pull and twist repeatedly
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work with knives
  • Ability to lift product overhead and/or to climb ladders with product
  • Ability to climb stairs
  • Ability to read small print
  • Ability to write notes, emails, and items of a similar nature on a computer, touch screen, or by hand
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to noise from machinery and the general environment
  • Ability to remember product placement and back stock
