Farm Crew Member Sugar Camp Farm

  • Date Posted March 27, 2024
  • Location Ashland City, TN
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Part-Time
Company description We are Jesse and Lizzie, first generation farmers who started Sugar Camp Farm in October of 2014. With backgrounds in landscape design and forest ecology, respectively, and a strong desire to pursue a career that worked in concert with nature, our dream to farm was born. After a couple of apprenticeships, we dove right in and began selling at farmers markets in 2015.  In 2018, we welcomed our daughter into the world. In 2021 we moved from Bon Aqua, TN to Ashland City and took the whole farm with us. We chose to take a farming sabbatical that year as we also welcomed our son Theo and setting up a new farm was a lot! We are back in 2024 after two great seasons on the new farm and we'reexcited to be growing our farm.

At Sugar Camp Farm we strive to bring you high quality produce while farming as sustainably as possible. We are a very small family farm with up to 3/4 acre under cultivation at peak season. We grow a variety of vegetables and herbs for market, chefs and other local organizations. We are slowly working towards a no-till system and we’re working towards building and preserving soil biology, chemistry and structure to bring you highly nutritious and flavorful food.
Job description

We currently have openings for 2 part time, seasonal (2-3 days a week) or one full time position on our farm crew. The job is located in Ashland City, TN just 25-30 min from Nashville.

The farm crew will learn most aspects of farming including greenhouse work, planting, field maintenance, harvesting, washing and packing, deliveries, cooking farm lunch for the crew, chicken care, and beyond. If a crew member has an interest in a particular aspect of daily farm operations, over time they may accrue more responsibility in that particular area.

The farm crew will receive a farm gear stipend, paid time off, lunch on the farm, and vegetables from the farm. As farm crew members don’t live on the farm, commuting to the farm is required. Each crew member will have a 1 month trial period at the end of which we will check in and see if we are all a good fit for one another. The position starts as soon as possible and ends in November/December. We can be flexible about dates. Work days are also flexible and we will work with the final crew line up to establish a schedule that works for everyone. Work hours are 8-5 with a paid lunch break in spring and fall and 7-4 in summer.

We are looking for candidates who pay attention to detail, are problem solvers, love teamwork, enjoy and appreciate food, have fun, can handle hard work in extreme weather conditions, are physically capable of lifting 50 pounds safely and repetitively, are good communicators, have a positive attitude, and are excited to learn! Previous farming experience is a plus but not a requirement! We’re willing to teach you if you’re motivated! In addition, we have 2 small children that may be around the crew occasionally, so crew members must be comfortable with kids (and if you’re interested in babysitting for more hours, let us know!). As we have just relocated our farm, it’s a perfect time for someone who is interested in farming to see how we are setting up our new place after several years experience.
