Farm Crew Wild Roots Farm

  • Date Posted March 30, 2024
  • Location Troutdale, OR
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Part-Time
Company description Wild Roots is a small market farm located in Troutdale, Oregon - a 20 minute drive from Portland, owned and operated by Mary Colombo. We grow a wide variety of high-quality vegetables and herbs following organic practices for restaurants, CSA, farmers markets, and grocery stores in the Portland area. When it comes down to it, we fell in love with farming because we love food - mainly the ways in which it can bring us together. While we really enjoy growing tasty vegetables, what keeps us going is the community around us. Job description We are a fairly small crew that consists of farm owner Mary, co-manager Stephen, a few part-time employees, and one full time employee. There are also three other farm businesses (flowers, fruit, and vegetables) on the farm, and we will work alongside/collaborate with them from time to time.  We strive to create a positive, inclusive, and understanding work environment. We highly value clear communication and a passion for learning.  Farming is hard work and we also want to take time to appreciate the joy of it.

Our goal in the future is to work towards collective farming - on our own farm and within our farming community. These conversations have already begun and we are excited for what the future holds - we are stronger together. We donate produce to several organizations in Portland and are dedicated to coming up with solutions for how to increase access to high quality vegetables for folks within our community. Once a week, an organization comes out to the farm to glean produce that is then re-distributed to those who are food insecure. During the past several years, our farm has formed a relationship with Growing Gardens and along with delivering them CSA shares which they re-distribute to low-income families, we also grow starts for their gardens program.

Our part time employee will participate in most aspects of the farm including nursery propagation, transplanting, weeding, harvest, wash/pack, irrigation, delivery, and all aspects of crop care.

The Nitty-gritty:
  • Wage range from $18-20/hour depending on experience/responsibilities.
  • One week paid sick leave
  • One week of paid vacation
  • Access to lots of vegetables and other foodstuffs through our partner farms.
  • June through October, plus potential for part-time Winter work.
  • Work days are 8 hours with a half hour lunch (7-3:30)
  • 24 hours a week - set schedule of Monday through Wednesday
What we are looking for in an applicant:
  • At least 1 full season spent working on a production farm.
  • Detail oriented and able to meet our high standards, especially in harvest quality and consistency.
  • Able to work quickly and efficiently.
  • Can lift at least 50 lbs repeatedly.
  • Able to perform manual labor in harsh weather conditions.
  • Flexibility and desire to learn new methods and farm systems.
  • Good communication skills, a positive attitude, and an open mind.
  • Able to work independently and as a team.
  • Listens well and takes direction. Able to take constructive feedback from managers.
  • Able to take initiative but also knows when to ask questions when needed.
  • Good driving record needed to fulfill delivery duties and be insured on the company vehicle.
  • Our location is only accessible via car.
  • Can commit to a full season.
  • Comfortable driving a delivery van in PDX.
