The Horseshoe Kitchen & Bar pays homage to the international community that built Jersey City with a fusion menu by Top Chef finalist and author, Chef Chris Scott. Chef Scott, who brings passion and experience to the kitchen, draws inspiration from a global pantry of flavors and influences– connecting the past and present in his soul-food-with-a-twist.

 

In 1871, what is now the Soho West neighborhood of Jersey City was known as “The Horseshoe.” This area, which gives this new restaurant its home and name, describes both the shape of the gerrymandered second ward, the iron that poured from its steel mills, and perhaps, a bit of luck for new immigrants hoping to make it big in Jersey City.

 

The Jersey City of the 19th century was humming: noisy and chaotic—the terminus for millions of trains, trucks, immigrants and goods arriving from everywhere! Factories churned out tobacco, soap, meat, iron and more, belching smoke and opportunity. People came to build their new lives in this new world. Many can trace their family lines right back to this area—and many more benefited from the spoils of The Horseshoe. 

 

Today, we embrace the history of our neighborhood and pay homage to the passion and industry that built it. The Horseshoe Kitchen & Bar is home—everyone can feel welcome and valued in it. 

Job description

The Horseshoe Kitchen & Bar is a brand new establishment in Jersey City, NJ opening in April 2024. This concept combines the best of classic Americana food with modern fusion twists from South Asia and a full bar.

We are seeking a professional-trained and experienced cook/chef to join our team as an assistant to the executive chef of a brand new restaurant in Jersey City. As a sous chef, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of our food service establishment. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion for the culinary industry and strong leadership skills.

Responsibilities:

- Oversee daily operations of the food service establishment, including inventory control, food production, and quality assurance.

- Collaborate with the management team to create menus, plan special events, and ensure customer satisfaction.

- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, following all health and safety regulations.

Qualifications:

- Previous experience in food service is required.

- Strong knowledge of inventory control, food industry regulations, and culinary techniques.

- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire a team.

- Exceptional organizational and time management abilities.

- Strong communication skills to effectively interact with staff members, customers, and vendors.

- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.

- A passion for delivering high-quality food and exceptional customer service.
