OUR MISSION:

The Chester County Food Bank seeks to create a food secure Chester County. We mobilize our community to ensure access to real, healthy food. Chester County Food Bank (CCFB) is a countywide, non-profit organization located in Exton, PA that has been in existence since 2009. CCFB works with over 150 agency partners to distribute over 3 million pounds of food annually to 9% of Chester County residents. We provide educational opportunities through programs including Eat Fresh, Fresh2You Mobile Market and Seed to Supper to engage the community in hands-on learning experiences.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Food Access Field Manager works with the Food Access and Education team and reports to the Director of Food Access and Education. This role is responsible for day-to-day field operations,  greenhouse production, crop planning and maintenance. This role is the primary liaison with farm partners for growing and gleaning to meet the needs of the food bank.  This position will provide supervision and management of the CCFB volunteers and seasonal staff to achieve high levels of productivity, community engagement, and relationship building.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Responsible for seedling production, crop planning and fulfillment of needs for Food Access programs in collaboration with farm partners and CCFB team members.
  • Serve as the key point of contact for partnerships involving MOA’s and ensure all aspects of the MOA are executed appropriately.
  • Organize and manage volunteer groups of various ages, abilities, and backgrounds to assist with the completion of various field projects with the highest level of safety.
  • Provide education and awareness of the role of the food bank and its services for the community.
  • Perform physical labor with and without volunteers. This includes bed preparation, planting, weeding, thinning, cultivating, pruning, trellising, harvesting, washing, packing, loading, delivering, and unloading produce, mowing, light construction/facility
  • Assist and co-manage greenhouse propagation and
  • Assess water needs and run irrigation systems as
  • Survey fields for weekly harvest forecast, identify and manage disease and pests.
  • Work as a member of the Food Access and Education team to meet the needs of CCFB.
  • Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum two years of vegetable production experience or a combination of bachelor’s degree in agriculture and one year of
  • Experience in plant propagation and greenhouse
  • Must possess a working knowledge of vegetable production concepts and ability to comprehend and implement new agricultural concepts and
  • Walk-behind tractor and tractor/skid steer experience
  • mower, trimmer, power equipment experiences preferred.
  • Experience and/or ability to drive a cargo van, a truck, and truck with landscaping trailer, as
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment child abuse background check

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Strenuous outdoor and indoor activities and subject to temperatures below 35 degrees F and above 90 degrees F. Adverse conditions and extreme weather such as heat, humidity, cold, dirt/dust, pollen, precipitation, wind, and
  • Ability to lift 30-40 lbs frequently, 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to operate equipment such as lawn mowers, string trimmers, backpack blower, and walk behind tractor in excess of 80
  • Ability to move bulk product in the fields, from fields to warehouse, and in the warehouse
  • Ability to use and operate forklift, (Certification provided by CCFB)
  • Ability to operate both manual and electric pallet jacks
  • Gross manipulation of legs, feet, wrists, and hands
  • Exceptional hearing and vision

WORK SCHEDULE:

This is a year-round full-time exempt, salaried position. The schedule will be heavier during the growing season in April to November. Work schedule will be adjusted as needed to accommodate the seasonal demands of vegetable production.
