  • Job type Full-Time
Company description Northern Tilth provides technical services related to recycling by-products as soil amendments, while helping to build the science of residuals recycling and soil fertility. Job description Northern Tilth, LLC is a small, private environmental consulting company located in Belfast, Maine. Though we are involved with a wide variety of projects, the common thread is a focus on recycling beneficial organic wastes back to agricultural soils. A large portion of our work involves crafting detailed nutrient management plans (NMPs) for farms. Through these projects, we visit many different types of farms, take soil samples, learn the details of each farm’s organic waste management (in most cases, this means manure management), and help the farm improve its management for optimum crop growth and minimal environmental impact.
This spring, Northern Tilth has an opening for an aspiring nutrient management planner to join our tight-knit team in our Belfast, Maine office. The job will begin with doing a lot of field work and ArcMap data entry, and expand to encompass all aspects of writing nutrient management plans. Days of the week and hours per week are somewhat flexible and will be determined during the hiring process. The ideal candidate has the following attributes:
• Interest in agriculture & the environment
• Ability to work long, physically-demanding days walking fields and sampling soil, as well as being comfortable writing, mapping and crunching numbers; over the course of a year, the job has about a 4:1 ratio of desk/computer work to field work.
• Ability to locate agricultural fields and navigate fields using maps with satellite imagery
• Attention to detail
• Good communication skills, able to communicate well with a variety of clients and coworkers
• Excellent writing skills
• Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team
• Flexibility and the ability to think on your feet
• Solid working knowledge/comfort level with Microsoft Office software, especially Word and Excel

Additional attributes that are preferred but not necessary:
• Background in agriculture, either through education or direct experience (or both)
• Experience using ArcMap
• Experience writing and using formulas in Excel
• Strong interest in/curiosity towards farm-level nutrient management and nutrient budgets
• Knowledge of best practices for addressing environmental resource concerns on farms
• Knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices such as crop rotations, cover crops, soil health management, etc.
