Valley Malt and Ground Up are food manufacturing businesses producing malt and flour for Northeast brewers, bakers, and distillers. We are a family-owned company that sources raw material (small grains) entirely from family farms in the Northeast and pride ourselves in the quality and consistency of our products. Owners Andrea and Christian Stanley started Valley Malt in 2009 to prove a concept: that the Northeast could grow and malt excellent quality malt for craft brewers. They have worked for the last 14 years building on that foundation and expanding beyond craft beer and spirits into flour, baking, and pasta-making.

Job description

The Miller reports to the Director of Operations and the owners and will be trained by them, as well as the other millers currently working at Ground Up.

Ground Up - Miller

  • Responsibilities and Duties 
    • Operating the two stone mills to produce high quality, artisanal flour.
    • Milling and packaging orders according to the weekly production schedule.
    • Maintaining proper grain fill levels for each mill, adhering to established recipes for Ground Up flour, utilizing our automated filling system.
    • Identifying any process issues, by checking flour, midlings, and bran coming out of the mill to ensure proper extraction levels are being reached.
    • Filling, labeling, weighing and stitching wholesale (50 pound) bags of flour.
    • Packaging flour into retail size bags ranging from 3 pounds to 25 pound bags.
    • Documenting all flour batches in the daily production log.
    • Maintaining a clean environment, meticulously cleaning floors, packaging surfaces, bins, hoppers and walls.
    • Following safety procedures and utilizing the company provided personal protective equipment to ensure a safe work environment.
    • Using a fork truck to move pallets of flour, sacks of grain, hoppers full of flour and occasionally pallets of malt.
    • Assisting with external shipping company pick ups of products being shipped out to customers.
    • Staging orders for delivery drivers, both internal and external.
      • Physical Demands This job requires constant standing and moving around, climbing ladders, scooping grain and flour often, lifting and carrying 50 lb bags often, pushing/pulling 1 ton pallets, occasional reaching, lifting, carrying, stooping. Stacking pallets of 50 pound bags manually.
       

      Success Criteria:

      • Able to self assign duties for the month, week, and day to complete production that is scheduled. 
      • Clean and tidy mindset, always keeping the work areas clean at the end of a shift and documenting work and cleaning performed. 
      • Prioritizing customer satisfaction as well as quality, consistency, and neatness of product shipping out. Ability to securely wrap a pallet for shipment.
      • Having a safety mindset, knowing how to use PPE and why PPE needs to be used.
      • Fork truck driver experience is required for this position. Certification preferred, but we will get you certified if you are not. 
       

      Qualifications

      High School Diploma (minimum), Ability to perform physical labor constantly: lifting 50 lb. bags, climbing ladder with 35 lb buckets, ability to effectively work with limited supervision, ability to interface with a computer, ability to be trained to operate.

       

      Hours: M-F between 9am-6pm, flexible 8 hour shift.

      Pay Rate: $20-$23 per hour
