JOB SUMMARY
 
The 2024 Seasonal Farm Chef Resident is responsible for implementing and maintaining all aspects of the inaugural culinary program at OHF which will feed the farm staff and visitors largely from our own farm product. This person will work with other staff members as well as contractors, volunteers, researchers, educational participants, and other members of our regional food and farm economy.
 
Goals of the Program
 
1. Utilize as much of the farm production as possible in meal program for the farm while minimizing waste
2. Educate and inspire staff, visitors (including food systems professionals, farming community, ownership,
youth summer campers), the community and beyond about cooking good food with regenerative farm product
3. Collaborate with Guest Chefs for special programming
 
Deliverables of the Program
 
1. Staff lunches during workdays utilizing both cultivated and wild farm product
2. Update staff snacks program to offer farm sourced snacks where possible
3. Collaborate on design and produce at least 2 farm dinners (Peak Summer Harvest/Fall Equinox) for
the full farm community
4. Produce value-added products from farm product for year-round consumption
 
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
OHF is one of the last remaining intact farms on the south end of Aquidneck Island. The rugged and rolling terrain provides a unique character and is often the first impression visitors to the area have of regenerative practices. Creating healthy, beautiful food from these practices is key to our work. A strong interest in farm to table systems that support the regional food and fiber economy in relationship to ecosystem functioning, as well as human and ocean health, is essential to this position.
REQUIRED SKILLS & CAPACITIES
    • Passion for making high-quality food using local product and drawing from world cuisines
    • Strong culinary skills in feeding groups on a regular basis
    • Hands-on, hardworking and self-motivated with good time management, organizational skills, attention to details, and strong operations capabilities
    • Ability to meet deadlines, complete tasks and coordinate implementation of work assignments with a team
    • Ability to operate safely, familiarity and comfort with both rustic and state of the art kitchen equipment.
    • Comfort in agricultural settings, including around livestock, as well as culinary and educational settings.
    • Experience working with and sourcing healthy farm products from farmers.
    • Comfort using Google Suite.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, in order to establish and maintain effective relationships with coworkers, visitors, vendors, etc.
    • Legal authorization to work in the USA.
    • Driver's license required to fulfill job duties
    • Ability to lift 55 pounds on a regular basis.
    • Ability to work for long periods of time while standing.
    • Comfortable with exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions
    • Comfortable with exposure to noise from farm, kitchen and shop equipment
    • Experience in regenerative farming, organic or biodynamic farming a plus
    • Prior off-premise catering, management, and or restaurant experience a plus
    • Adhere to and follow all safety procedures in accordance with training and report any dangerous conditions to management immediately
    • Be a positive spokesperson and representative of OHF in the local community and beyond
    • Perform additional duties as needed.
WORKING COMMITMENT & COMPENSATION
    • This is a 4-month, full-time residency position from July 15 – November 15
    • Compensation is $3,000 per month ( $16.85 per hour, subject to overtime) with a room provided on farm in a shared house, and farm product available for meals. Monthly stipend is based on a total of 18 weeks at 40 hours per week.
    • Typical work hours are M-F 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, with some evenings, weekends and holidays as required
