Internship Local Roots Farm

  • Date Posted November 01, 2012
  • Location Duvall, WA
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job Type Internship/Apprentice
Job Description General Description:
Local Roots is a 10 acre diversified vegetable farm located in the Snoqualmie Valley, near the town of Duvall. We sell at several farmers markets in Seattle, to local restaurants, and we offer a 200 member CSA.

Internship Details:
Apprenticeship: Apprentices will be fully involved with all aspects of farming, marketing, and business planning. We work 5 days a week, 50+ hours a week, but there is time to hang out, swim in the river, and cook delicious food. Learning is hand-on and self-directed and we believe that those who intend to start their own farms will get the most out of this apprenticeship. Our number one goal is to provide apprentices with the skills and confidence to start their own farm.

Please visit our blog to learn more about us, our farm, and our general outlook on the world: http://localrootsfarm.wordpress.com/

Skills Desired:
No previous farming experience is necessary, just enthusiasm and a serious desire to learn how to run a small-scale, sustainable commercial farm. Apprentices need to be physically fit and able to lift 40+ pounds. Ideal applicants will love to cook and eat, be easy going, eager to learn, and not shy about asking questions.

We are looking for people who have good observation skills, who can remember lots of details, and who enjoy active and ongoing communication.

If you are a person who tends to be quiet or introverted, who waits for instruction rather than asking for it, and/or who dislikes participating in early morning meetings, you will not fit in well with our working style.

No tobacco users please.

Educational Opportunities:
Local Roots is a new farm - 2007 was our first year in operation. In 2011 we bought our own property and moved our operation. We are building our farm and our business model and we hope to share our ongoing growth and experience with apprentices who are seriously considering a life of farming. All aspects of farming and business operation will be open to apprentices' participation. Apprentices will plant, cultivate, harvest, work at farmers markets, participate in building projects, and learn farm equipment operation and maintenance.

We love to teach, answer questions, help you find resources, and share our entire business and farm process with interns. The people who have gotten the most out of their internships with us have been those who ask a lot of questions and seek out information. It's all there for you if you take an active role in your learning on the farm.

Stipend:
Monthly stipend depending on experience and length of stay.

Housing:
Housing is available in a shared house or in travel trailer. All workers share a common area, bathroom, and kitchen.

Meals:
Farm produce is provided, plus staples (beans, rice, flour, oil, tea). We are an omnivorous farm. No militant vegans please!
