Love & Carrots is DC’s foremost urban farming and edible landscaping company. We design, install and maintain organic urban farms, vegetable gardens, and native landscapes across DC, MD, and VA. Through our garden care & coaching program we provide expert garden maintenance, guidance, and education in almost 150 gardens every year, helping connect people to their food and inspiring local food production and farming inside the beltway. Since our inception in 2011 we've installed over 500 gardens and our clients include residents, local restaurants, and community organizations throughout the DMV.

Who you are:
A person experienced with growing food, looking to expand urban farming and organic gardening by sharing your skills with our clients. You want to be out in gardens all day cultivating crops, trouble shooting for plant and vegetable issues, and engaging with clients. Love & Carrots is a small but fast-growing company; therefore we are in search of an applicant passionate about Urban Agriculture who is looking to grow with Love & Carrots.
- Amending soil, fertilizing
- Seeding, weeding, pruning, harvesting
- Applying organic pest control practices
- Trellissing, irrigation repair and management
- Ensuring the area in and around the garden is neat and clean
- Engaging with clients: sending recap emails, answering questions, receiving client feedback and applying to garden
- At least two full Seasons of growing experience on a farm, or in a community garden, etc.
- Ability to create and manage garden planting plans that maximize garden production and beauty.
- Deep knowledge of proper harvesting, weeding, transplanting, sowing, fertilization and rotation/secession planting techniques.
- Carpentry or building experience (eg. power tools, cold frame construction, trellis installation, raised bed building etc.)
- A knowledge of Mid-South climate as it relates to Seasonality, Hardiness Zones, common pests and disease identification, and common growing practices for the region.
Necessary Qualifications:
- An affinity for veggies, soil, local food, getting dirty, and working hard.
- An ability to work independently, taking initiative and the ability to function as part of a team, leading and following direction as necessary.
- The ability to think on your feet and proactively come up with solutions to common garden issues on the spot (trellising/irrigation repairs, etc) without immediate assistance. Love & Carrots' Urban Farmers are often on their own in clients' gardens and must not be reliant on other staff for minor fixes.
- An affinity for engaging and conversing with clients of all ages and backgrounds and understanding of Love & Carrots offerings
- A driver's license and use of a vehicle -- Our Farm and Main Office are located in Hyattsville, MD and we're going to need you to be able to reliably get there AND to all of our Clients' gardens which span the DC Metro Area and into Maryland and Virginia.
- The ability to lift 50 lbs. or so; the job is definitely physically demanding as is all agricultural work, so please consider this.
- A positive, can-do attitude!
- Paid, Full-time, Seasonal: March through November 2017 with the possible opportunity of returning for the 2018 Season.
- Pay based on experience; from $12-$15/hour.
- Five PTO days.
- We welcome you to take home veggies/herbs/flowers from our Farm as the Season allows.
