Appalachian Headwaters is a nonprofit organization focused on sustainable economic development and restoration of former mined land in central Appalachia. One of Headwaters’ major initiatives is the advancement of beekeeping and native plant horticulture in central Appalachia.

We are hiring a staffperson to help develop our Beekeeping Collective, a beekeeping training and support program throughout the region. The immediate two-year goal of this program is to establish 3,000 hives and train and support 150 new beekeepers in southern West Virginia. This staff person will also help to develop a Sustainable Education Center in Summers County, West Virginia, along one of the most beautiful stretches of the Greenbrier River. Headwaters will use the facility as an attractive retreat facility geared toward apiculture and native plant horticulture education.

Responsibilities:

• Develop and conduct educational programming at the Sustainable Education Center
• Oversee Beekeeping Collective Program
• Conduct educational workshops on beekeeping skills throughout southern WV
• Set up and manage apiary of 100 bee hives for nuc and queen production
• Recruit new beekeepers to Beekeeping Collective
• Manage 1-3 educators and crew members
• Coordinate with project partners

Qualifications:

• Strong science background
• Strong writing and public speaking skills required
• D. preferred but not required
• Teaching experience preferred
• Significant beekeeping experience preferred (it is possible that an exceptional applicant can be hired without such experience, but highly unlikely)
• Willingness to engage in occasional overnight travel
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to people of diverse backgrounds
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple and diverse tasks
