Job Description: Farm Educator
City Growers seeks Farm Educators to facilitate interactive farm lessons on a variety of sustainable concepts for youth at Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Farms in Brooklyn and Queens. This part-time, seasonal position offers the right candidate meaningful leadership experience in environmental education. We are seeking passionate and enthusiastic educators with a strong interest in sustainable agriculture and the food movement to join our team. The Farm Educator will manage and co-teach with education interns, and will report to the Program Manager.
City Growers is an educational non-profit founded in 2011 by the co-founders of Brooklyn Grange, a rooftop farm business located in New York City. City Growers connects NYC children and young adults with the natural world and the origins of their food, using Brooklyn Grange's rooftop farms as learning laboratories.
Farm Educator responsibilities will include:
- Facilitate hands-on lessons on a variety of sustainable concepts, including urban agriculture, compost, environmental issues, plant science, insects and chickens for children and teens at Brooklyn Grange rooftop farms
- Oversee a small team of education interns alongside co-Farm Educator and Program Manager
- Coordinate with teachers on day of farm visit in cases of rain and tardiness when necessary
- Photograph farm visits for use on City Growers’ social media outlets
- Maintain records and collect data from visiting youth groups
- Ability to occasionally lead farm lessons after regularly-scheduled hours or weekends
- Study & Learn City Growers Farm-Based Curriculum
- Maintain and cultivate City Growers’ learning bed and worm bin
- Water and provide food daily for chickens; occasional coop clean out
- Set up and clean up farm workshop materials
- Maintain positive relationships with Brooklyn Grange team, visiting adults, building tenants and security
Eligible candidates must have the following qualifications:
- Teaching experience or experience working with children/teens
- Gardening / farming experience
- Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility and leadership qualities
- Knowledge of sustainable practices and basic biological processes
- Positive attitude around children and young adults of all ages
- Strong desire to learn more about urban agriculture, rooftop farming, environmental education, and food justice
Time Commitment
3-5 days a week, April 3- June 30 with additional employment opportunities in summer and fall
5 hours per day 9:00-2:00, occasional after-school hours and or Saturday Hours
