Company description The Bed Stuy Campaign Against Hunger (BSCAH) is Brooklyn’s leading direct provider of emergency food and related services. Our flagship program is a client-choice supermarket-style food pantry that is open five days a week and serves an average of 30,000 clients each month. In addition to the provision of emergency food, BSCAH provides a range of social support services to assist our customers in finding solutions and pathways out of food and financial insecurity. These services include on-site SNAP and healthcare enrollment, benefits access, job referrals, assistance with applications for city services including housing. Work will include, but is not limited to:
  • Providing mentorship and instruction to youth ages 14-24 in all daily farm operations
  • Supporting with aquaponics system
  • Direct seeding and transplanting of all crops
  • Managing the greenhouse and caring for seedlings
  • Drip irrigation & overhead watering
  • Harvesting & processing all crops for sales
  • Setting up, running, and breaking down the weekly market
  • Pest, weed, and disease management
  • Overseeing harvest standards for markets, restaurants, programs, and donations.
  • Maintaining a record of all seeding and field planting, maintaining a farm harvest log, and training youth to do the same
  • Submitting detailed weight and sales records on a regular basis
  • Developing strategies for productivity, efficiency, and engagement with the farm
  • Leading workshops, volunteer groups, and regular tours, and social media outreach\
  • Mulching, trellising, pruning, and tilling
 Qualifications: 
  • Experience working with aquaponics
  • Commitment to, passion for, and experience in food justice, community driven work, and working with youth
  • Self-motivated, excellent communicator, ability to work well alone as well as with others
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather
  • Able to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Eager to learn and able to solve problems independently and as part of a team
  • Experience working with volunteer groups
  • Familiarity with google drive - sheets, docs, and calendar
  • Attention to detail, organized
  • Ability to work with groups that range in age, abilities, race, gender, religion, etc.

Ideal candidates will possess:

  • Familiarity with Far Rockaway community / a resident of Far Rockaway
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
Compensation this position is : hourly, $15/hr + Application instructions
