Company description

His father was born in a log cabin and called from the humblest rank in life to preside over our nation during the most momentous period of its history. One generation later, Robert Todd Lincoln, the only child of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln to survive to adulthood, became Chairman of the Pullman Company, the largest manufacturing corporation at the turn of the 20th century. He built his Georgian Revival mansion in 1905 in the scenic village of Manchester. It became home to only Lincoln descendants until 1975, longer than any other Lincoln residence. Hildene seeks a full-time employee to work at our goat dairy and cheesemaking facility. While experience is helpful, we can train a willing employee in parts of the job with which she/he is not familiar.

Farm staff will be milking 19 does from our herd of Nubian goats. Milk is made into artisanal cheeses and small batches of soap. The state-of-the-art combination dairy and cheesemaking facility is open to guests at Hildene to learn about the goats and to observe each step of the cheesemaking process. The operation fits within Hildene’s larger educational mission and regularly hosts school groups, summer day camps, and other programming.

This position includes tasks on both the dairy and creamery side of the operation. Responsibilities at the dairy include: caring for the herd, cleaning barns and facilities, and milking. Ideal candidates are able to lift 50 pounds, drive a tractor, and work some overnight shifts during kidding season in the spring.

Work in the creamery requires assisting in all aspects of cheesemaking including: cleaning and sanitation, creamery maintenance, taking part in makes, packaging and caring for cheese as it ages. Applicants should be eager to learn about cheesemaking and able to work both as part of a team and independently. Attention to detail and cleanliness are essential. Experience with food production or handling is helpful but not required.

Both areas of work are physically demanding but rewarding. They require a good attitude and willingness to work as part of a small but hardworking team.   All staff members are expected to welcome guests and answer questions, as well as work with our large crew of volunteers. On occasion, staff give tours to guests and school groups. Hildene work shirts, caps and jackets are provided and are required wear. Some weekend work is required.

It may be possible for two half-time individuals – one focused on the dairy and one focused on cheesemaking -- to fill this position.
