Nathan Winters / Owner / Relly Bub Farm

Okay, okay, so we have another young urban professional turned farmer story for you. We couldn’t help ourselves. It’s not our goal to beat a dead horse, as the saying goes. But if the proof is truly in the pudding (as they also say!) then we feel it’s our duty to feed you lots of pudding. Which is where Nathan comes in so obligingly. We dare you not to be inspired by his work at Relly Bub Farm, even if farming is not your goal and never has been.

Morgen Neagle / Farm Manager / Flying Pigs Farm, LLC

If Morgen’s last name rings a bell, it’s for good reason. Up until September 2010, his main claim to GFJ fame was being the older, wiser brother to Good Food Jobs co-founder Dorothy Neagle. Since then, he’s catapulted to food fame in his own right, as Farm Manager at Flying Pigs Farm in Shushan, NY. Whether you watch him herding pigs upstate, or catch him at the Greenmarkets in NYC, you’ll notice that he’s amassed incredible expertise in 18 months, thanks in part to his experience growing up on a small farm in Kentucky. A landscape architect by trade, he switched paths from office to outdoor work when recession layoffs hit hard. We hate to say we’re happy for that misfortune, but we can’t complain to have someone as capable as Morgen ‘on our team’.

Jessica Kesselman / Program Director & CSA Coodinator / Rockland Farm Alliance

These days, we are living on the extremes, with each of us in an urban or a rural community (Dorothy in Brooklyn, Taylor in the North East Kingdom of Vermont), and we don’t often spend time thinking about the suburban wilderness in between. If you’ve ever thought to yourself, ‘I could never live in a suburb.’ then Jessica’s story might be the one to make to you think twice. Her thoughts on food and community are as engaging as any tale of 24-hour bodegas on every corner, or miles of clear, bright stars in the country sky.

Katie Yanchuck / Marketing & Sales Coordinator / Sweet Stem Farm

At GFJ we’re all about being proactive, and Katie’s just the type of good food job holder that we like to see! She emailed us in tandem with a recent job that Sweet Stem Farm posted, which led to a conversation, which led to us featuring her on the blog. It goes to show you that you never know who you will meet or what you will learn until you start initiating conversations. So in case you’re scoping out New Year’s Resolutions, you may just want to follow in Katie’s footsteps and write that email. You never know what will come of it.

Annemarie Ahearn / Owner & Chef / Salt Water Farm

You’d think that saying ‘check out this dream job!’ over and over again is bound to become boring…But just when we think we’ve met someone with the ultimate dream job in food, Annemarie shows up and upstages them. We can’t wait to see who will be next. But for now, it’s Annemarie’s moment to inspire you, make you jealous, or give you a reason to take that trip to Maine that you’ve always fantasized about. And if you can’t get enough of Annemarie’s voice, you can literally here it in her recent interview on Heritage Radio Network.

Nora Painten / Project Director / Student Farm Project

Depending on where you live in the world, the concept of a young farmer might be old news to you, or it might be just plain bizarre. We dug up Nora to help spread the word that not only is farming – specifically, pulling weeds – some people’s idea of the perfect 9-to-5er, but it can also be a career path as unique and vibrant as the person (young or old) who chooses it. She’s also a timely reminder that farmers are entrepreneurs, too.

Cheryl Cohen / Director / London Farmers Markets

Whether you work in the food industry, or daydream about working in it, chances are that you spend as much time as you can at your local farmers’ market. Even if it’s only once in a blue moon, on a random weekend drive upstate, when you find yourself at the telltale cluster of tents, there is a feeling of magic that’s hard to attribute to any one component – the sight of fresh produce, the way people are drawn together, the possibility of what you’ll discover among the stands. When Nina Planck founded the London Farmers’ Markets in the UK capital, Cheryl was the first person she hired to help her organize that magic and spread it around the city. If you’re in the area, don’t miss out on an opportunity to visit one – and if you live there, don’t miss Cheryl’s invitation to get involved (see below)!

Kate Barney / F.A.R.M.S. Apprentice / Blue Hill at Stone Barns

While Kate unfortunately falls under the category of another gastrognome we have yet to meet in person, we know she’s a kindred spirit because of her passion for Blue Hill and the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, a place that embodies the values of sustainability and food culture and translates them beautifully through education and service. She was among the first to fill their coveted, and relatively new, apprenticeship program, and you won’t be alone in feeling jealous. But don’t let yourself turn green with envy – fill out your own application for the next round of hiring!

Gemma DePalma / Director of Operations / Five Acre Farms

Many of you know by now that we at Good Food Jobs are partial to dairy products. We just can’t help it. Perhaps the only thing better than a tall glass of milk, fresh from the farm, is knowing that the people behind it are dedicated to promoting sustainable food. Since Five Acre Farms launched its Local Milk and made it accessible for supermarket shoppers, the cartons have been selling like hotcakes. If you’ve picked it up off the shelf, prepare to feel even better about your purchase by getting to know the woman who made it possible.

John Suscovich / The Food Cyclist / FoodCyclist.com

We were fortunate to meet John during last year’s New Amsterdam Market season, on what was unfortunately one of the worst days of the year to be outdoors. Through the freezing rain, his warm smile was enough to persuade us into a photo op for Brooklyn Bread. As you’ll discover, working behind the camera is a talent from his previous career, and not one that you would necessarily associate with bicycling or farming. But these days, people all over the world are redefining career associations with their good food jobs, and John is the perfect example of someone on a journey to do just that. Meet the Food Cyclist.
