Tama Matsuoka
Meadows + More
April 02, 2013

Take a look at the website for Tama's company, Meadows + More, and you'll be blown away, as we were, by the beauty and simplicity of it. Nature and food are both simple and complex - a dichotomy that makes them so irresistibly, unspeakably divine. What we find most inspiring of all is how Tama found a way to turn that into her livelihood.

When did you know that you wanted to work in food?

It was one of those things where every ounce of your heart tells you this is what you want to do. You don't know where it will lead but you feel absolutely compelled to do so. Because life can be complicated and food and the earth is so real and in a way so simple. You know what you see, touch and taste.

But at the same time we need to be practical and, for me, I think it was also because I was at a certain time in my life, where I had had a successful career in business, that I felt able to "go for it". Didn't want to wait another 10 years.

How did you get your current good food job?

Made it up/totally unplanned. But seriously, it is about building something of value FIRST and then if you build something of quality that is not just a commodity, demand will come to you. My products are the real thing.

How did your previous work or life experience prepare you for a good food job?

Everything that I ever did was preparation for what I am doing now. Culture, family, attention to detail, governance, working hard, dealing with different people, perseverance, knowing when to quit and when to push......

What was the greatest obstacle you had to overcome in pursuing your Good Food Job dream?

The greatest obstacle I think when I see many people with dreams is that you need real world experience, to be committed and also give back generously to others. I think some people want "glory" but don't want to get bogged down in the details. When you give to others, they will also give back to you. There is amazing support and excitement in food now. So many people have been incredibly generous to me in time and experience.

But what it really means is that when you find those people who really believe in the same things that you believe, you have to commit to each other. That way you are more than just an individual effort. And there is power in that.

What can you identify as the greatest opportunities in food right now?

To step outside the ordinary of what we think as food and redefine what is real food. We need to take back control over what we are eating.

If you could be compensated for your work with something other than money, what would it be?

The enjoyment of seeing other people have more meaning in their lives through better eating and a reconnection with nature, which is really where our food comes from.
